Head Coach Roger Powell Jr.: Roger Powell Jr. (12-29) is in his second season as the head coach of the Valpo men’s basketball program. After helping guide Gonzaga to a 121-13 record during his four seasons as an assistant coach, Powell returned to Valpo, where he was part of head coach Bryce Drew’s staff from 2011-2016 and led the team to 124 wins in five seasons, including a program-record 30 victories and a National Invitation Tournament (NIT) title game appearance in 2015-16. He was part of head coach Mark Few’s Gonzaga staff as the Bulldogs reached the 2021 national championship game after winning their first 31 games of the season. During Powell’s first season on staff in 2019-20, Gonzaga was 31-2 at the time the NCAA college basketball season was halted due to COVID-19. The Bulldogs reached the Sweet Sixteen in each of his final three seasons on staff, including two Elite Eight appearances and the aforementioned trip to the 2021 national title game. Prior to his arrival at Gonzaga, Powell served as the associate head coach at Vanderbilt University under Bryce Drew from 2016-2019. During his stint as an assistant at Valpo, he was part of four Horizon League regular-season championships in a five-year period while also leading the 2012-13 and 2014-15 squads to Horizon League tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. A product of Joliet West High School and a native of Joliet, Ill., Powell capped a prolific collegiate playing career at Illinois with a national title game appearance in 2005 before going on to a successful professional playing career.
Series Notes: The Beacons will play Ohio State for the fourth time and first since Nov. 25, 2011, an 80-47 loss to the then No. 3 Buckeyes. Valpo also played in Columbus on Dec. 2, 2006, a 78-58 Ohio State victory in Greg Oden’s collegiate debut. Current Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler started for Valpo and had five points and six rebounds in 28 minutes against the No. 3/1 Buckeyes. The Brown & Gold beat Ohio State in the first matchup between the two teams on Nov. 25, 2000, a 67-64 victory at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska.
Facing a Familiar Face
- Ohio State head coach Jake Diebler played for Valpo from 2005-2009, starting all 98 games over his final three seasons. He was then part of the coaching staff from 2009-2013.
- Diebler and Valpo head coach Roger Powell Jr. coached together at Valpo from 2011-2013 and at Vanderbilt from 2016-2019, under head coach Bryce Drew at both schools. At Vanderbilt during those years, the third assistant on staff was Casey Shaw, the father of current Valpo redshirt sophomore Isaiah Shaw.
- During his playing days at Valpo, Diebler was known as one of the program’s hardest-working players on both ends of a court and had a program-record 278 consecutive minutes played over seven games in the first half of his senior season. At the time of his graduation, his 130 career steals (10th) and 229 career assists (16th) ranked among the program’s all-time leaders.
- Diebler graduated from Valpo with a degree in marketing in 2009 and went on to earn his master’s in business administration from the school in 2011.
- Diebler served as an assistant coach for the Buckeyes from 2019-20 through Feb. 14, 2024, when he was named interim head coach. He earned the permanent job by leading the Buckeyes to a 6-2 record as interim head coach including an upset of No. 2 Purdue.
- Ohio State assistant coach Luke Simons was part of the Valpo coaching staff in Bryce Drew’s final season as head coach in 2015-16 alongside Roger Powell Jr. They then worked together at Vanderbilt from 2016-19 along with Diebler and Shaw, as Simons served as Director of Scouting. Simons is in his first season at Ohio State after serving as the Director of Basketball Operations under former Valpo head coach Scott Drew at Baylor for the last two seasons.
- While Diebler is certainly a familiar face to Valpo fans, Powell is somewhat of a familiar face to Ohio State fans, as he led Illinois to a 5-1 record against the Buckeyes in Big Ten play during his playing days from 2002-05. Powell averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in six games over three seasons against Ohio State.
Valpo vs. Power-Conference Competition
- Valpo’s last win over a power-conference opponent was a 68-60 success story vs. Alabama at a multi-team event in Las Vegas on Nov. 21, 2016.
- The win over the Crimson Tide marked Valpo’s third triumph over a power-conference opponent in a two-year span. During the 2015-16 campaign, the team went on the road and beat Oregon State and then took down Florida State at the ARC in the second round of the NIT.
- Prior to 2015-16, Valpo hadn’t beaten a power-conference opponent since the 2008 win over Washington in the CBI.
- Nine of Valpo’s last 12 victories over power-conference opponents have come on neutral floors, with the most recent true road win coming in the aforementioned game at Oregon State.
- Valpo has lost 16 straight against Big Ten competition dating back to Dec. 28, 2004, a 69-56 victory over Penn State as part of the Arizona State Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
A Return to the Road
- Valpo did not play a true road game until Nov. 27, the latest Valpo played its road opener since 2008-09 (Dec. 2 at Cleveland State).
- On Saturday vs. Central Michigan, Valpo closed out a stretch of playing seven out of eight at home after starting the season with a neutral-site contest.
- The Beacons are hitting the road this week for back-to-back trips – Tuesday at Ohio State and Friday at Western Michigan.
- Prior to Saturday’s game vs. Central Michigan, Valpo has played only one game over the last 14 days, but now the Beacons are in the midst of playing four games in nine days to close out the nonconference docket. After the two road games this week, Valpo hosts Calumet College of St. Joseph on Sunday, Dec. 22, the team’s second game in under a week against a Valpo grad as CCSJ head coach Jason Hawkins played for the Brown & Gold from 2000-2003.
Everything’s Gonna Be All Wright
- Freshman All Wright poured in a personal-best 26 points to help Valpo beat Central Michigan 93-77 on Dec. 14. His point total doubled his previous career high of 13 that occurred on Nov. 27 vs. Northern Illinois.
- Wright went 8-for-8 at the free-throw line while draining four 3s against the Chippewas.
- Over the last 16 seasons, Wright became just the fourth different Valpo freshman to score at least 26 points in a game, joining Cooper Schwieger (twice), Javon Freeman-Liberty, Alec Peters (three times) and Matt Kenney. Freeman-Liberty and Peters both went on to play in the NBA, while Schwieger and Wright are on Valpo’s current roster.
- Wright’s 26 points were the most scored by a Missouri Valley Conference freshman in a game this season. The last freshman on any Valley team to score at least 26 points in a game was Cooper Schwieger on March 3, 2024 vs. Illinois State (28).
- Wright’s performance was just the 13th time nationally that a freshman scored at least 26 points in a game this season and he became just the 10th different freshman in the nation with a 26-point performance this year.
- The only mid-major rookies in the country who have scored 26 points or more in a game in 2024-25 are Wright and San Francisco’s Tyrone Riley IV (twice).
- Wright, who was born in Durango, Mexico before moving to Carthage, Mo. at age 2, is the son of Joe Wright, who played at Kansas State from 1984-1986. His legal name is Andre All Wright Vargas but he goes by All Wright. His brother Always Wright is a member of the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball program.
Growing Up on Valpo Basketball
- Valparaiso native and nearby Victory Christian Academy product Tyler Schmidt delivered his second straight game with 20+ points on Dec. 14 vs. Central Michigan. He one-upped his season high of 20 that came in the previous game against Drake with 21 points on 7-of-8 at the free-throw line and 4-of-5 from 3-point territory against the Chippewas.
- In the game against Central Michigan, Schmidt grabbed a season-high six rebounds. He is Valpo’s leading scorer at 12.9 points per game and has scored 17 points or more in four of his last five games.
- In the Dec. 5 Missouri Valley Conference opener against Drake, Schmidt and Isaiah Shaw shined for the Beacons, a pair of players who have deep Valpo roots.
- Schmidt’s team-high 20 points came on 7-of-9 shooting and 3-of-5 from distance. He outdid his previous season high of 19 that occurred on Nov. 24 vs. Eastern Illinois. Schmidt made his first seven shots of the night.
- Isaiah Shaw tallied a career-high 15 points against the Bulldogs, edging his previous personal best of 14 from Nov. 8 vs. Concordia Ann Arbor. He shot at a 5-of-7 clip and made three of his four 3-point attempts.
- Schmidt and Shaw share a common thread of having spent their youth in Valpo.
- Schmidt is a Valpo native, attended Valpo Basketball kids camps growing up and has returned to play Division-I basketball in his hometown for his final year of college eligibility after four years as an NAIA standout at Olivet Nazarene.
- Shaw, the grandson of legendary Valpo head coach Homer Drew and the nephew of Bryce and Scott, lived in Valpo fully for a year and a half growing up and also spent summers there through age 10 while spending the winter months in Italy, where his father was playing professionally.
Putting Up Points
- Valpo produced 93 points in the Dec. 14 win over Central Michigan, the team’s most against a Division-I opponent since Nov. 15, 2017 at SIUE (94) and the most against a Division-I opponent at the ARC since Jan. 22, 2017 vs. UIC.
- The 93 points were the most allowed by Central Michigan since Dec. 9, 2023 at Creighton (109). The Chippewas were allowing just 67.5 points per game entering that one, second in the Mid-American Conference and 95th nationally in scoring defense before giving up 93 to the Beacons.
- Valpo handed Central Michigan its most lopsided loss of the season after the Chippewas had previously not fallen by double figures with the only setbacks by one against Stony Brook, eight against Marquette and three against Minnesota.
Starter Shakeup
- Valpo changed up its starting lineup on Dec. 14 vs. Central Michigan, as Kaspar Sepp and Tyler Schmidt made their first starts of the season. They joined Cooper Schwieger, Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro and All Wright.
- Schwieger and De La Cruz Monegro are the only Beacons who have started all nine games this year.
- Senior point guard Darius DeAveiro had started the first 40 games of the Roger Powell Jr. head coaching era before coming off the bench on Dec. 14 against the Chippewas. Devon Ellis also came off the bench after starting each of the first eight games this season.
- Schmidt made his 97th collegiate start and first in a Valpo uniform.
- Sepp made his first start of the year, but started 15 times a year ago for Powell’s squad.
Freebie Frenzy
- Entering Dec. 17 at Ohio State, Valpo is shooting 82.0 percent at the free-throw line this season, ranked fifth nationally and first in the Missouri Valley Conference.
- Valpo put together yet another stellar showing at the stripe on Dec. 14 vs. Central Michigan, going 28-of-31 (90.3 percent). That marked the first time Valpo shot 90 percent at the charity stripe with a minimum of 30 attempts since Nov. 29, 2013 vs. Mercer (29-32, 90.6 percent).
- Valpo went 23-of-25 at the free-throw line on Nov. 24 vs. Eastern Illinois for a season-best 92 percent at the stripe, then made a season-high 35 free throws on 44 attempts on Nov. 27 vs. Northern Illinois, hitting at a 79.5 percent clip.
- Valpo shot 79 percent or better at the free-throw line in the first six games this year and seven out of nine games overall.
- There is a lot of season left to be played, but for reference, the modern program record for team single-season free-throw percentage is 77.5 percent in 2016-17 followed by 77.4 percent in 1992-93.
- Tyler Schmidt made his first 20 free throws of the season before finally missing with 19 seconds left in the first half on Nov. 27 vs. Northern Illinois. His free-throw percentage of 91.2 ranks 34th nationally.
- Valpo’s 35 made free throws on Nov. 27 vs. Northern Illinois were the team’s most in a game since going 36-of-44 on Jan. 15, 2014 at Detroit Mercy. The 44 free-throw attempts were the team’s most since Jan. 10, 2017 vs. North Park (46).
- The Beacons and Huskies combined for 57 made free throws and 74 free-throw attempts. This was the first Valpo game where both teams had at least 30 free-throw attempts since Jan. 3, 2018 at Bradley.
- Valpo posted a better free-throw percentage than its opponent in each of the first six games this season and eight of nine overall.
Other Notes Wrapping Up Dec. 14: Valpo 93, Central Michigan 77
- The game featured 12 ties and four lead changes and was tightly played until Valpo pulled away down the stretch.
- Freshman All Wright (26) and fifth-year senior Tyler Schmidt (21) combined for over half of Valpo’s points.
- Junior Jefferson De La Cruz Monegro tallied a season-high 16 points including an 8-of-8 free-throw shooting performance. He has scored at least nine points in all nine games this season including seven double-figure outputs.
- Sophomore Kaspar Sepp squeezed 11 rebounds, matching his season high set on Nov. 24 vs. Eastern Illinois and one shy of his career high that was established in last year’s matchup with the Chippewas. Sepp has at least seven rebounds in six of his nine games.
- Valpo made 11 3-pointers, tying a season high set on Nov. 8 vs. Concordia Ann Arbor.
- The team overcame a rare high turnover number as the Beacons gave it away a season-most 16 times, but they did record a season-best nine steals.
- Valpo held a 35-33 rebounding advantage against a Central Michigan team that entered the contest leading the MAC and ranked 27th nationally in rebounding margin at +8.6 per game.
- The home team has won 10 straight matchups between Valpo and Central Michigan.
Rookie Rewards
- Justus McNair was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Nov. 26 after averaging 9.5 points per game, going 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from the field and going 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from 3 as Valpo went 2-0 against Lindenwood (Nov. 21) and Eastern Illinois (Nov. 24).
- His biggest showing came in the Nov. 24 game against the Panthers, as he poured in 16 points and made four 3s to help Valpo to a 28-point win.
- The following week, All Wright was named the MVC Freshman of the Week on Dec. 2 after tallying in double figures in both contests that week with 13 in a win over Northern Illinois and 10 at DePaul.
- The Beacons have had a propensity for taking the league’s weekly freshman honor during Roger Powell Jr.‘s head coaching regime, as a Valpo rookie has earned that award eight times since the start of last season.
- At the time these notes were compiled on Sunday, Dec. 15, the league’s weekly honors following Valpo’s Dec. 14 game vs. Central Michigan had not yet been announced, but there is a strong chance that Wright will once again be recognized by the MVC on Monday, Dec. 16.
Not The Season of Giving
- With the holiday season underway, Valpo has said “bah humbug” in the best way possible, limiting the giveaways to 10 or fewer in six of the team’s nine games including four straight prior to a rare high turnover total with 16 on Dec. 14 vs. Central Michigan.
- Valpo is averaging just 10.0 turnovers per game, the fewest in the MVC and 30th fewest nationally.
- After losing the turnover battle in the season opener against Liberty, Valpo has won or tied the turnover battle in eight straight games.
- The Beacons committed just four turnovers on Nov. 27 vs. Northern Illinois, the team’s fewest in a game since Nov. 28, 2014 (four in a 66-46 victory over Drake).
- The Beacons held a distinct 24-7 advantage in points off turnovers in the Nov. 27 matchup with the Huskies.
Scouting the Buckeyes
- Ohio State is led in scoring by Bruce Thorton at 14.9 points per game.
- The Buckeyes are coming off a 91-53 loss at No. 2 Auburn on Saturday after splitting a pair of conference games the previous week at Maryland (L 83-59) and vs. Rutgers (W 80-66).
- This will mark Ohio State’s second game of the season against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent after an 80-30 win over Evansville on Nov. 19.
- The Buckeyes won two games in the NIT last season, beating Cornell and Virginia Tech before falling 79-77 to Georgia.
Other Notes Wrapping Up Dec. 5: Drake 66, Valpo 60
- Valpo’s bench outscored Drake’s bench 39-16. Tyler Schmidt and Isaiah Shaw combined for 58.3 percent of Valpo’s total points.
- Sophomore Kaspar Sepp squeezed a team-high seven rebounds. The Estonia native has grabbed seven or more boards on five occasions in the first eight games of the year.
- Drake outscored Valpo 32-18 in the paint including a 22-6 advantage in the second half.
- The win allowed the Bulldogs to remain one of nine undefeated teams in the nation. As of Dec. 11, just seven unbeaten teams remain including the Bulldogs.
#SCTop10
- Devon Ellis threw down a poster dunk with 6:33 left in the first half on Nov. 30 vs. Northern Illinois, a play that was featured on SportsCenter’s Top 10 that evening as the No. 1 play of the day on the popular ESPN countdown.
- That marked the fifth time in the last five years that Valpo men’s basketball has been featured on SportsCenter Top 10 and the first since Kobe King nailed a three-quarters court shot to beat the buzzer on Dec. 11, 2022 vs. Charlotte.
- Valpo Athletics has developed a propensity for producing #SCTop10 plays, as this represented the department’s fifth in the calendar year 2024, joining Leah Earnest (women’s basketball; buzzer-beater on Feb. 4 at UIC), Alex Ryan (baseball; robbed grand slam on April 28 at UIC), Caron Tyler (football; leaping touchdown on Sept. 7 at Youngstown State) and Gary Givens III (football; touchdown catch that set up game-winning 2-point conversion on Nov. 23, 2024 vs. Davidson).
- Valpo has been featured on #SCTop10 15 times spanning six sports since joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 2017.
The 300 Club
- Senior point guard Darius DeAveiro became the 15th player in program history to reach the 300-assist threshold, doing so on Nov. 21 vs. Lindenwood. The milestone came with 9:48 left in the first half on a basket by Cooper Schwieger.
- He became the first Valpo player to surpass 300 assists since Keith Carter in 2016. DeAveiro, who had a season-best nine helpers in the win over the Lions, had five at DePaul on Nov. 30 and is up to 322 for his career, 12th in program history, entering Tuesday at Ohio State. He climbed over Tracy Gipson (1989-93, 316) and Brandon McPherson (2005-10, 316) on the all-time list during the game against the Blue Demons.
- The Canada native finished last season second in the MVC and 30th nationally with 170 assists and ranked second in the MVC and 36th nationally in assists per game at 5.3.
- In addition, the point guard scored in double figures 12 times after not having done so at all over his first two collegiate campaigns. His scoring numbers took a significant junior jump, as outlined below.
- DeAveiro is coming off a junior season where he dished out 170 assists, the third-most in a single season in program history behind only John McIlvain (197, 1982-83) and Ali Berdiel (185, 2003-04).

- Drew scored a then-record 2,142 career points (currently still second in program history), averaging 17.2 points per game while also pulling down 380 rebounds and handing out 626 assists in keying the team to an 88-36 record.

Winning Big
- Valpo blitzed Eastern Illinois 81-53 on Nov. 24, recording a 28-point margin of victory that represented the program’s largest against a Division-I opponent in over seven calendar years.
- The last time Valpo enjoyed a blowout win of 28 points or more was Nov. 19, 2017 vs. Southeastern Louisiana, an 83-50 victory.
- The game against Southeastern Louisiana was at a neutral site, so this was Valpo’s most lopsided Division-I win at the ARC since beating UIC 96-65 on Jan. 22, 2017.
Perfect Game
- Tyler Schmidt went 4-for-4 from the floor, 2-for-2 from 3 and 9-for-9 from the free-throw line while totaling 19 points in 23 minutes and posting an eye-popping plus-minus of +42 in the Nov. 24 win over Eastern Illinois.
- Schmidt became the first player nationally to go perfect from both the floor and the free-throw line this season with at least four field-goal attempts and at least nine free-throw attempts.
- The last player to do so nationally was Massachusetts’ Josh Cohen on Dec. 23, 2023 vs. Portland.

Stafford Sidelined
