#2 Ohio State loses at #3 Oregon 32-31; head coach Ryan Day pleased with QB Will Howard’s play, everything else needs to get better

EUGENE, Oregon – In a game that featured seven lead changes, No. 2 Ohio State (5-1, 2-1) dropped a 32-31 affair at No. 3 Oregon (6-0, 3-0) Saturday at Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Quarterback Will Howard completed 28-of-35 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns while added a score on the ground. Receivers Emeka Egbuka caught 10 passes for 93 yards and one score while Jeremiah Smith added 100 yards and a touchdown on nine grabs. Running backs TreVeyon Henderson ran for 87 yards on 10 carries while running mate Quinshon Judkins carried 11 times for 23 yards and a score. Cody Simon led the Buckeyes with 10 tackles while Sonny Styles added nine with six solos. Ohio State will have next week off before playing host to Nebraska Oct. 26.

Game time against the Huskers will be at 12 Noon.

Postgame Notes vs. Oregon

  • With its 32-31 loss, Ohio State’s record is 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten Conference play. The Buckeyes have an all-time record of 9-2 against Oregon.
  • Coach Ryan Day owns a career record of 61-9 at Ohio State.
  • Will Howard led the offense to a score on the first drive of the game, ending in a 1-yard touchdown rush.
  • He has now scored five rushing touchdowns this season and has one in each of the last five games.
  • Howard finished the night completing 28-of-35 passes for 326 yards and two passing touchdowns on top of his rushing score.
  • Quinshon Judkins scored his sixth rushing touchdown of the season and 37th in his NCAA career.
  • Henderson surpassed Pepe Pearson to move into 11th in school history for career rushing yards. Henderson now has 3,169 career yards, passing Pearson’s 3,076 yards.
  • Emeka Egbuka scored his sixth touchdown of the year. He has now scored a touchdown in four consecutive games.
  • Egbuka caught 10 passes for 93 yards.
  • He moved into a tie for 9th with K.J. Hill on the all-time career touchdown receptions list at 20.
  • Egbuka surpassed Marvin Harrison Jr. on the all-time career pass receptions list with 164 total. Harrison was ranked 6th and had 155 receptions. Egbuka is only one catch away from tying Michael Jenkins for 5th.
  • Egbuka also surpassed Santonio Holmes and K.J. Hill on the all-time career receiving yards list with 2,383. Homles was ranked 9th with 2,295 receiving yards and Hill was 8th with 2,332.
  • Jeremiah Smith scored in his sixth consecutive game, which also happens to be every game in his career to this point.
  • He scored his 7th touchdown of the season, which tied David Boston for 2nd in receiving touchdowns by a true freshman in program history.
  • Smith caught nine passes and now has 32 on the season. He surpassed Ted Ginn Jr. and Garrett Wilson on the all-time receptions by a true freshman. Ginn was 4th with 25 and Wilson was 3rd with 30.
  • Downs also led the team with two pass breakups and tied J.T. Tuimoloau with a team-high one tackle-for-loss.
