Major League Baseball announced that Tarik Skubal was named the Detroit Tigers’ 2024 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One, baseball’s most prestigious individual honor for Major Leaguers.

The Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One is the annual recognition of a Major League player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field.

As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.

This year, Tarik and his wife, Jessica, generously donated in support of Alternatives for Girls, an organization that seeks to empower homeless and at-risk young women by providing critical interventions and support. The donation from Tarik and Jessica is primarily focused on helping domestic violences survivors in the Metro Detroit community through Alternatives for Girls’ new housing unit, Dr. Maya Angelou Village.

Dr. Maya Angelou Village is a 100 percent affordable housing development through Alternatives for Girls and Full Circle Communities created to serve individuals and families in the Metro Detroit area. The development has a total of 45 units, 23 of which are dedicated solely to Alternatives for Girls. The donation from Tarik and Jessica covers the cost of all essential household supplies (bedding, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, etc.) for individuals and families as they move into each of the 23 units.

In addition to his work with Alternatives for Girls, Skubal has made an unrestricted donation to the Tigers Foundation, which has awarded more than $26 million in grants, Tigers tickets and college scholarships to local Metro Detroit residents since its inception in 2005. Skubal has also been involved in the Tigers Autograph for a Cause program since 2021. His Autograph for a Cause cards benefit the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the Little League program in his hometown of Kingman, AZ.

The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the “Commissioner’s Award.” The recognition was renamed to the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 as tribute to Clemente following his passing while delivering relief supplies for earthquake victims in Nicaragua on December 31, 1972.
