VanVleet Threw A Flyer Freshman Record 5 Touchdowns At Marist

ST. LOUIS — University of Dayton quarterback Drew VanVleet was named the Pioneer Football League’s Offensive Player of the Week as well as the Stats Perform National FCS Freshman of the Week after his performance in UD’s 47-14 win at Marist Saturday.

VanVleet was 23 of 35 passing for a career-best 323 yards, with five TD passes and one interception at Marist.  The five TD passes are the second-most in a game for a Flyer quarterback, and the most by a freshman.  Kevin Hoyng first did it against Morehead State in 2007, and Jack Cook did it at Butler in 2018.  Cook also holds the school record (6 vs. Jacksonville in 2019).

VanVleet and Hoyng are the only two Dayton QB’s to pass for at least five touchdowns and 300 yards in a game.

The redshirt freshman from Richmond, Ind. leads the PFL in completion percentage (.684, 80-117), total passing yards (982) and passing TD (10).  In FCS football he is sixth overall in TD, 10th in completion percentage and 24th in passing yardage, and is the top freshman in all three categories.

This is the third PFL honor and second national honor for a Flyer football player in four games this season.

Dayton has its second bye week of the season this week, and then will return to action at home against Davidson on Saturday, Oct. 12.  Game time is 12 Noon ET.
