Postgame Notes vs. Western Michigan

Ohio State defeated the Broncos 56-0

No. 2 Ohio State 56, Western Michigan 0
Sept. 7, 2024 – Ohio Stadium; Columbus, Ohio
Attendance: 102,665

  • With its 56-0 victory, Ohio State improves to 2-0 on the season and is now 38-1 all-time against MAC schools, winning the last 35 games.
  • Head coach Ryan Day is now 58-8 at Ohio State after recording a win in his first career game against Western Michigan. This was the second shutout under Day, with the first against Cincinnati in 2019.
  • Jeremiah Smith had five catches for 119 yards and one touchdown. He is now tied with Chris Olave and Marvin Harrison Jr. for fifth place on Ohio State’s freshman TDs list with three. The Ohio State single-season record for touchdown receptions by a freshman is eight by Cris Carter in 1984. Smith is now the first true freshman at Ohio State to have over 200 yards receiving through the first two games of a season.
  • The last Buckeye true freshman with a 100+ yard receiving game was Garrett Wilson against Michigan Nov. 30, 2019 in a 56-27 victory.
  • Quinshon Judkins gained 108 yards on just nine carries to join Smith as 100-yard performers on the day. The outing marked Judkins’ 14th career 100-yard game.
  • The Buckeye offense accumulated 406 yards in the first half. That was the first time they have gained more than 400 yards in a half since playing at Michigan State Oct. 8, 2022 (429).
  • Ohio State scored six rushing touchdowns between five different Buckeyes. TreVeyon Henderson and Judkins were each responsible for two, and James Peoples and Will Howard each had one. The last time the Buckeye offense was responsible for six rushing touchdowns was against Maryland in 2019.
  • Peoples joins Maurice Clarett (2002) as the only Buckeye freshmen to rush for a touchdown in each of the first two games of the season.
  • Two Buckeyes recorded their first career touchdown in the fourth quarter. Freshman Julian Sayin threw his first career touchdown pass as junior tight end Bennett Christian hauled in his first career touchdown on his first career reception. The touchdown was a 55-yard connection.
  • 12 different Buckeye receivers reeled in at least one catch.
  • The Buckeyes threw for 410 yards. The last time Ohio State topped 400 passing yards was Sept. 17, 2022 against Toledo (482).
  • Ohio State held Western Michigan to just 99 yards of total offense. It marked the first time the Buckeye defense limited an opponent to less than 100 total yards since allowing 66 yards in a 62-14 win over Maryland Oct. 7, 2017.
