COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 20 Ohio State (3-0-1) scored late to break a 2-all tie to down UNLV (1-2-0) 3-2 Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in the 2024 Wolstein Classic.
Ohio State took second at the event with Dayton earning the tournament title based on goal differential. The Flyers went 2-0 while outscoring opponents 7-1. Ohio State won its two matches by a combined score of 7-2.
How It Happened
Ohio State scored first in the 32’ when Michael Adedokun found the back of the net from right out front off a pass from Deylen Vellios. Adedokun has scored twice this year and has nine career goals. Vellios owns three assists this season and has six in his career.
The Rebels got the equalizer three minutes later when Tyler Ware got one by Ohio State’s Max Trejo to make it 1-all.
Just before the half ended, Buckeyes defender Siggy Magnusson was fouled in the box to draw a penalty kick. Parker Grinstead took the shot and scored in the right corner to put Ohio State up 2-1 entering the break.
It was Grinstead’s first of the year and ninth goal of his career.
Freshman Nick Skubis scored the go-ahead goal in the 77’ when he put away a rebound of an Adedokun shot to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 lead and the win.
Ohio State is 19-8-8 in the Wolstein Classic, which has been contested 18 times since 2006.
