Ohio State Field Hockey News: No. 14 Ohio State Closes 2-0 Weekend with Win over Bucknell

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four different Buckeyes scored a goal a piece on Sunday to lift the No. 14 Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0) over Bucknell (0-2) at Buckeye Varsity Field by a 4-1 final. The scarlet and gray defense held the Bison to only eight shots on the afternoon as goalie Abby Danson made five saves.

How it Happened

Ohio State opened up scoring early in the first quarter with a goal at 3:42 mark. After a scoreless second quarter, the Buckeyes struck again, going up 2-0, before Bucknell answered with a goal with 59 seconds left in the third quarter.

Ohio State then went on to score two unchallenged goals in the fourth quarter, taking the score to 4-1.

How The Goals Were Scored

  • Sophomore Cam Standish struck first for the Buckeyes, scoring on a unassisted tally just 3:42 into the game.
  • Coming off of a hat-trick performance in Friday’s game, forward Makenna Webster scored with 11:48 left in the third to put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Junior Katie Fichtner was credited with an assist on the play.
  • Lauren Sanford put the Bison on the board midway through the third quarter, assisted by senior Lily Neilson.
  • Junior Lindsey Roberts found the open goal 3:47 into the fourth thanks to an assist by Webster.
  • A Buckeye drive down the field saw sophomore Brenna Bough notch her 14th career goal with 6:94 left to go in the game.

 

Buckeye This and That

  • Today’s win marks the third-straight season the scarlet and gray have begun the year at 2-0 or better
  • The Buckeyes have scored a combined 10 goals in their first two games, the most since 2019.
  • Webester finished the weekend with 10 points on four goals and two assists. She now has 71 points in her 41-game Ohio State career.
  • Graduate student Kari Melberger faced her former team on Sunday. She transferred to Ohio State from Bucknell in spring of 2024 and was a 50-game starter for the Bison. She finished her Bucknell career with 11 points.
