Neely is expected to make his MLB debut tonight against the Detroit Tigers
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State baseball pitcher Jack Neely has been called up by the Chicago Cubs, announced by the team on Tuesday. He is expected to make his MLB debut tonight against the Detroit Tigers.
Neely, who the New York Yankees drafted in the 11th round (pick 333) of the 2021 MLB Draft, has had a strong season on the bump in the minor league. He has made 37 total relief appearances and has nine saves. He has recorded 76 strikeouts in 48.1 innings pitched and has an ERA of 2.42.
Neely was traded from the Yankees to the Cubs at the trade deadline and was sent to the Iowa Cubs, Chicago’s triple-A squad. He has made six relief appearances and notched three saves with Iowa. He has fanned 13 in 6.2 innings pitched and has a perfect 0.00 ERA. Neely is ranked as the Cubs’ No. 18 prospect.
Neely is one of five Buckeyes currently active in the MLB, joining Dominic Canzone (Seattle Mariners), Ryan Feltner (Colorado Rockies), Dillon Dingler (Detroit Tigers) and Zach Dezenzo (Houston Astros). Neely is the fourth Buckeye (Jacob Bosiokovic, Dingler, Dezenzo) to be called up this summer and will be the third (Dingler, Dezenzo) to make his MLB debut, marking the most debuts for former Buckeyes since the 2011 season. Pitcher Bosiokovic was called up by the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this summer but was assigned back to Triple-A Memphis before seeing any major league action.
