COLUMBUS – The Columbus Crew have acquired goalkeeper Abraham Romero from LAFC in exchange for $50,000 of 2024 General Allocation Money (GAM).

“Abraham is a great addition to our team and our strong group of goalkeepers as we approach the final stretch of the season,” said Columbus Crew General Manager Issa Tall. “He has gained good experience in MLS and Mexico, and we look forward to welcoming him to the Black & Gold and assisting his continued development.”

Romero has started three matches for LAFC this season across all competitions. In MLS NEXT Pro play, he has made 21 appearances, recording 53 saves with LAFC2.

The Pasadena, Calif. native began his youth career with LA Galaxy’s youth academy in 2012 at the age of 13 and spent four years with Los Angelinos. Romero joined Liga MX side C.F. Pachuca in 2016 as part of the U-20 squad and recorded 60 appearances and 12 clean sheets. He then joined the first team during Copa MX 2017-18 and the 2018-19 Apertura and Clausura campaigns. Romero was also available for selection for Los Tuzos during their 2017 FIFA Club World Cup campaign in the United Arab Emirates.

Romero also played for LA Galaxy II (2019-20) and the USL Championship’s Orange County SC (2021) and Las Vegas Lights (2022). He registered 49 appearances across four seasons.

Internationally, Romero has compiled 14 total appearances for Mexico from the U-17 through U-22 levels, including seven matches during the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile and five during the 2017 U-20 World Cup in South Korea.
