Game 7 Stanley Cup Final

Game 7 History

* This will be the 198th Game 7 in Stanley Cup Playoffs history, fourth in 2024 (EDM def. VAN in R2; DAL def. VGK in R1; and BOS def. TOR in R1) and 18th all-time in the Stanley Cup Final (last: STL def. BOS in 2019). This is third time in four years that the Stanley Cup Playoffs will feature at least four Game 7s.

* Home teams own a 12-5 advantage in the 17 prior Game 7s in the Stanley Cup Final, but road teams have won each of the past three – in 2019 (STL at BOS), 2011 (BOS at VAN) and 2009 (PIT at DET).

* This will be the 10th Game 7 in NHL history after one team pulled ahead 3-0 in the series. It is the third such instance in the Stanley Cup Final and first in nearly 80 years (1945: TOR led, DET rallied, TOR won; 1942: DET led, TOR rallied and won).

* Four teams in NHL history have overcome a 3-0 series deficit to win any round, including one in the Stanley Cup Final: Toronto rallied to defeat Detroit in 1942. The others: 1975 Quarterfinals (NYI defeating PIT), 2010 Conference Semifinals (PHI defeating BOS) and 2014 First Round (LAK defeating SJS).

* The 2024 Stanley Cup champion is guaranteed to have won a Game 7. Before this year, the last Cup winner to win a Game 7 during its playoff run was Tampa Bay in 2021 (1-0 in Game 7).

* Thirteen teams in NHL history have won multiple Game 7s en route to hoisting the Stanley Cup (last: STL in 2019), with the Oilers having the opportunity to do so Monday.

* Only two Stanley Cup Final Game 7s have gone to overtime, both won by Detroit at home: in 1950, when Pete Babando scored at 8:31 of double-overtime to lift the Red Wings over the Rangers, and 1954, when Tony Leswick scored at 4:29 of the extra session to power Detroit past Montreal.

* There also were seven winner-take-all games in the Stanley Cup Final prior to 1939, when the series shifted to the best-of-seven format. Those all were decided in Game 5: 1918 (TAN vs. VMI), 1920 (SEN vs. SMT), 1921 (SEN vs. VMI), 1922 (TSP vs. VMI), 1928 (NYR vs. MMR), 1931 (MTL vs. CHI) and 1937 (DET vs. NYR).

Game 7 History – Florida and Edmonton
* Florida will compete in its fourth all-time Game 7 (2-1 in 3 GP), following the 1996 Conference Finals (3-1 W at PIT), 2012 Conference Quarterfinals (3-2 OT L vs. NJD) and the 2023 First Round (4-3 OT W at BOS).

* The Oilers will compete in the franchise’s 13th all-time Game 7 (8-4 in 12 GP). Their .667 winning percentage is tied with the Panthers and Sharks (8-4 in 12 GP) for the fourth highest in NHL history – a total which also includes a 4-3 record as the road team.

* The Oilers have won each of their last two Game 7s: in the 2024 Second Round (at VAN) and 2022 First Round (vs. LAK). Their longest streak of Game 7 victories is four games (1990-98).

* If Game 7 goes to overtime, the Panthers (2x to date) will join the Blues (3x) as the second team in NHL history to require overtime in three of the franchise’s first four Game 7s.

* The Oilers are a perfect 2-0 in Game 7s that require overtime: 1997 Conference Quarterfinals (4-3 OTW at DAL) and 1991 Division Semifinals (5-4 OTW at CGY). Only one team in NHL history has won each of its first three Game 7s that required overtime: Detroit (3 GP from 1950-54).

* The Panthers are the 18th franchise in NHL history to play a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final and just the fifth to debut in the 1990s or later: also 2006 Hurricanes (3-1 W), 2004 Lightning (2-1 W), 2003 Ducks (3-0 L) and 2001 Avalanche (3-1 W). Florida can become the 13th different franchise to win a Game 7 in the Final.

* The Panthers can become the fourth franchise to win its first Stanley Cup via a Game 7 victory – only the Blues (2019), Lightning (2004) and Hurricanes (2006) have done so.

* The Oilers will contest their third Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final after defeating the Flyers in 1987 (3-1 W) and losing to the Hurricanes in 2006 (3-1 L). Edmonton will become the fourth franchise to contest at least three Game 7s in the Final, following Detroit (3-4 in 7 GP), Montreal (2-2 in 4 GP) and Toronto (3-0 in 3 GP) – the only three clubs with multiple Game 7 wins to clinch the Cup.

* This is the third time a team from the Miami metropolitan area will be playing a Game 7 in a championship round in the NBA, MLB or NHL. The Florida Marlins defeated Cleveland in the 1997 World Series (3-2 W) and the Miami Heat ousted San Antonio in the 2013 NBA Finals (95-88 W).

* Amerant Bank Arena will become the 14th different arena in NHL history to host a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final, and only the third building in the Sunbelt following RBC Center in 2006 in Raleigh and St. Pete Times Forum in 2004 in Tampa.

* This is the 14th unique Game 7 matchup in a Stanley Cup Final and the 10th in the expansion era (since 1968). Overall, it is the 126th unique Game 7 matchup in any playoff round and third this year following Dallas and Vegas (R1) as well as Edmonton and Vancouver (R2). The 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs are the third straight postseason with three first-time Game 7 matchups after 2023 (COL vs. SEA, BOS vs. FLA & DAL vs. SEA) and 2022 (TOR vs. TBL, DAL vs. CGY & NYR vs. CAR).

Players and Head Coaches in Game 7s
* Oilers forward Corey Perry (4-2—6 in 10 GP; 5-5 record) is one of seven active players with at least 10 career Game 7s. His six career Game 7 points are tied for the fourth most among active skaters, behind Alex Ovechkin (4-4—8 in 12 GP), Joe Pavelski (3-4—7 in 11 GP) and Brad Marchand (3-4—7 in 12 GP).

* Panthers forward Vladimir Tarasenko (1-1—2 in 5 GP; 4-1 record) leads the club in Game 7 appearances and is the only player on either team with Game 7 experience in the Stanley Cup Final. Tarasenko had an assist in 14:45 of ice time in Game 7 of the 2019 Final to help the guide the Blues to their first Cup.

* This will be the fourth career Game 7 for both Connor McDavid (2-1; 1-1—2) and Leon Draisaitl (2-1; 0-2—2). Both players have factored on a game-winning goal in a Game 7: Draisaitl assisted on the clinchers in the 2022 Second Round (vs. LAK) and 2024 Second Round (vs. VAN), while McDavid also had an assist in 2022.

* Oilers forward Mattias Janmark (2021 R1 w/ VGK) is one of two active players with a hat trick in a Game 7 (also Joel Kiviranta: 2020 R2 w/ DAL). There have been eight total Game 7 hat tricks, but none in the Final.

* The only player for Florida to score an overtime goal in a Game 7 is Carter Verhaeghe (2023 R1 vs. BOS). The only Oilers player to do so is Adam Henrique (2012 CQF vs. FLA). No player in NHL history has scored multiple Game 7 overtime goals.

Sergei Bobrovsky’s only Game 7 appearance came in the 2023 First Round against the Bruins, where he made 33 saves in an overtime win. Bobrovsky (35 years and 278 days) can join Johnny Bower (39 years, 169 days in 1964 w/ TOR), Tim Thomas (37 years, 61 days in 2011 w/ BOS), Gump Worsley (35 years, 352 days in 1965 w/ MTL) and Patrick Roy (35 years, 247 days in 2001 w/ COL) as the only goaltenders to win a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final at age 35 or older.

Stuart Skinner will be appearing in his second career Game 7 after he backstopped Edmonton past the Canucks with a 15-save performance in the 2024 Second Round. Skinner can become the first Oilers goaltender with multiple Game 7 victories in a single playoff year and can join Grant Fuhr (1987) as the second netminder in franchise with a Game 7 win in the Stanley Cup Final.

Paul Maurice is 4-0 in four career Game 7s and can join Peter DeBoer (8-0) as the only head coaches in NHL history to win each of their first five career Game 7s.

Kris Knoblauch won his Game 7 debut in the 2024 Second Round. The only head coaches in the past 50 years to participate in a Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final with one or fewer previous Game 7s to their credit are Dan Bylsma (2009, 1 GC), Craig MacTavish (2006, 0 GC), John Tortorella (2004, 1 GC), Mike Babcock (2003, 0 GC) and Mike Keenan (1987, 1 GC).

Kris Knoblauch (94 GC, including playoffs and Game 7) will become the fourth head coach in NHL history to serve a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final with less than 100 NHL games of experience, following Dan Bylsma (49 GC in 2009 w/ PIT), Al MacNeil (75 GC in 1971 w/ BOS) and Jimmy Skinner (81 GC in 1955 w/ DET). Bylsma, MacNeil and Skinner all won their respective Game 7.

* This will be the second Game 7 in Stanley Cup Final history featuring opposing 50-goal scorer from that regular season (Sam Reinhart and Zach Hyman), following 1994 (Pavel Bure w/ VAN and Adam Graves w/ NYR).

* The Oilers and Panthers have travelled approximately 22,500 miles combined in the Final entering Game 7.
