Moldovan is just the fifth Buckeye to earn the award four times
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Neal Shipley and Maxwell Moldovan both were named All-Big Ten on Tuesday by the conference.
Shipley, the low amateur at this year’s Masters Tournament, was a unanimous first team selection. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native leads the team with a 71.07 scoring average and has a team-best six Top 20 finishes. He is coming off a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championship, earning All-Championship Team honors. Shipley also claimed his first collegiate victory this spring, winning the Southwestern Invitational in January.
Moldovan becomes just the fifth Buckeye to earn All-Big Ten accolades four times, joining Rick Borg (1977-80), Clark Burroughs (1982-85), Greg Ladenhoff (1981-84) and Chris Smith (1988-91). He earned second team honors for the second time this season and also has two first team honors the last two years. He is averaging 71.37 strokes per round and has five Top 20 finishes on the season. The Uniontown, Ohio native has 18 rounds at par or better this year and has pushed his school record 85 career rounds at par or better. At the end of this season, he will hold the program’s career scoring record.
Shipley and Moldovan have led the Buckeyes to six Top 5 team finishes this season, including a win at the Southwestern Invitational. The Buckeyes will likely be selected for an NCAA Regional for the fifth consecutive season, tying the program record.
Jacob Tarkany, a redshirt-sophomore from Scottsdale, Ariz., was named the Buckeyes’ Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree this season. Tarkany has played in seven events and holds a 74.65 scoring average. He shot rounds of 70-69 (-1) to finish a career-best fourth at The Cardinal Individual this past fall.
