NY Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, nicknamed “Polar Bear” has set several records since his debut out of the University of Florida in 2016.
Alonso made his MLB debut on Opening Day 2019 and won the National League’s Rookie of the Year that season, setting a major league record for rookies with 53 home runs.
The 29-year-old slugger reached another personal milestone at Citi Field on Saturday afternoon by clubbing career home run No. 200 over the right-center-field fence in the fifth inning against Cardinals right-hander Sonny Gray. Alonso probably would have preferred a better scenario as the Mets lost to St. Louis 7-4.
Alonso, who will be a free agent after the season, joined outfielder Darryl Strawberry (252), 3B David Wright (242) and catcher Mike Piazza (220) as the only Mets in the 200-homer club.
