Columbus Crew shocks the Soccer World by winning in Mexico over Tigres in CONCACAF Play

Match Notes:

  • The Crew earned a 1-1 (4-3) penalty shootout win against Tigres UANL Tuesday night in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup Quarterfinals at the Estadio Universitario in San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico. The Black & Gold now advance to the Concacaf Champions Cup Semifinals for the first time in Club history.
    • The Crew are the first MLS team to advance to the next round of Concacaf Champions Cup when facing a LIGA MX club after hosting and not winning the first leg of the series.
    • Following tonight’s result, Columbus will face the winner of the CF Monterrey-Inter Miami CF series in the Concacaf Champions Cup Semifinals. The match kicks off at 10:30 p.m. ET.
    • The Black & Gold maintain an unbeaten record (1-0-3) in regulation through their first four 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup matches.
    • Columbus has scored at least one goal in 24 of its past 25 matches across all competitions, netting 46 in the stretch.
  • Forward Diego Rossi leveled the scoring in the 59th minute with a right-footed shot from inside the penalty area.
    • This marks the fourth goal netted by Rossi in Concacaf Champions Cup play across nine appearances in the competition.
    • Rossi has posted goals in back-to-back Concacaf Champions Cup matches. Both of Rossi’s goals in 2024 have come in the past eight days against Tigres UANL.
    • Rossi registered his third goal against Tigres UANL – two in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup Semifinals and one in the 2020 Final with LAFC.
  • Forward Cucho Hernández recorded the assist to Rossi’s score, his second assist of the season across all competitions.
  • Midfielder Alex Matan returned to the pitch after entering the match at the beginning of extra time. This marks Matan’s first appearance since the first leg of the Round of 16 series against Houston Dynamo FC, when he scored the game winner in the 96th minute of a 1-0 victory.
