WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – William & Mary Director of Athletics Brian D. Mann announced a change in leadership within the men’s basketball program Sunday morning.

The Tribe will part ways with current head coach Dane Fischer, who will leave the program after compiling a 56-91 record after five seasons with the program.

“Coach Fischer is a person of high character and integrity, and I am grateful for all he has done for our student-athletes. However, the time has come for change in our program,” Mann said. “As a university, we hold ourselves to the highest standards and are committed to competitive excellence in all our varsity athletics programs. My focus now turns to identifying the right person to uphold those standards as our next men’s basketball coach.”

Over his five seasons at the helm, the Tribe accumulated a 32-50 record in Coastal Athletic Association play. In 2019-20, his first season at the helm, Fischer was named CAA Coach of the Year after leading the Tribe to a 21-11 record and second-place CAA regular season finish. Under his tutelage, several players earned league honors, including CAA Player of the Year, CAA Defensive Player of the Year and CAA Rookie of the Year.

“Our student-athletes benefitted from their time with Coach Fischer and his commitment to their personal growth,” Mann said. “We thank Dane for his service to the university, and wish him and his family well.”

The search for William & Mary’s next head coach will begin immediately.
