GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—The Columbus Fury (4-3) hit a roadblock on Saturday as their four-match winning streak was snapped by the Grand Rapids Rise (4-4). The Rise came out firing and earned a dominant set one win before the Fury responded with a dominant win of their own in set two. After the intermission, Grand Rapids took the 2-1 set lead and all the momentum as they came away with the four-set victory.
Set 1
The Fury got out to a slow start with Grand Rapids taking an early 13-5 lead. Columbus struggled with serve receive which led to the slow start offensively, the team had only seven kills in the set. The Rise were strong at the net totaling six blocks in the set to just two for Columbus.
Set 2
Columbus flipped the script in set two on their way to a 15-9 lead at the media timeout. The Fury put down eight kills, surpassing their set one total, before the timeout. Columbus went on a 10-4 run after the media break to win in dominant fashion, 25-13. Megan Courtney Lush notched a kill and an ace to give the Fury set point and Reagan Cooper closed out the set with her sixth kill of the afternoon.
Set 3
The Rise came out of the intermission and grabbed a big lead, forcing a Fury timeout down 11-4. Grand Rapids led by as many as 11 points, but behind the serve of Jenaisya Moore, Columbus cut the lead to 18-12 forcing a timeout by the Rise. The Fury were unable to overcome the large lead though, falling 25-17 in the set.
Set 4
The Fury took an early three-point lead, going up 5-2 on an error from the Rise, but Grand Rapids tied the set at 7-all. Columbus went on a 4-0 run to take an 11-7 lead on back-to-back aces from Courtney Lush, forcing the Rise timeout. The Fury held their lead through most of the set and were up 17-14 when Grand Rapids went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 17. Columbus held off two match points but fell 25-23 to end the match.
Standout Stats
- Courtney Lush tallied a season-high 13 kills and added 13 digs for her second double-double of the season, she also had a team-high three aces.
- Rainelle Jones led the Fury with four blocks on the day and also added two aces.
- Reagan Cooper looked human compared to her last four matches totaling eight kills and nine digs on the day.
- The Rise had the advantage at the net, winning the blocking battle 15-12, and hitting .187 to the Fury’s .116.
