Dayton Flyers News: Men’s Basketball Visits Loyola Chicago Tonight at 9 PM

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball team, ranked 21st/20th in the AP and Coaches polls this week, is at Loyola Chicago for one of the biggest games of the home stretch of the Atlantic 10 season on Friday.  Game time is 9  p.m. ET.  Dayton is 22-5 overall and tied for second with Loyola in the A-10 at 12-3.  UD’s three league losses are by a total of 11 points.

The game will be carried by WHIO Radio, televised on ESPN2 and streamed on ESPN+. Streaming audio, video and live stats are available at DaytonFlyers.com.

Dayton cruised to an 80-66 win over Davidson at home on Tuesday.  Koby Brea’s 17 points led six Flyers in double figures.  DaRon Holmes II his ninth double-double (14/10) of the year.

• DaRon Holmes II was named Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He was the only player on the first team and the defensive team.
• Holmes is on four prestigious preseason watch lists — Atlanta Tip-Off Club’s Naismith Award (Mid-Season Top 30), the Los Angeles Athletic Club’s John R. Wooden Award (Late Season Top 20) the USBWA Oscar Robertson Watch List (top 40) and the Karl Malone Award (finalist).
• Holmes leads the A-10 in scoring (20.2) and UD in rebounding (8.0).  He is the only player in the league’s top eight in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and blocked shots.
• Holmes is now the Dayton career record holder for blocked shots (205) and dunks (230).
• Holmes and Zach Edey are the only players in D-I who has more than 50 blocks, 50 dunks and 50 assists.  Holmes has 58, 60 and 69 respectively.   Holmes also has 26 threes and is shooting .371 (26-70) from deep.  He had just seven threes in his first two years at UD.
• He has been national player of the week three times (March Madness, USBWA Robertson Trophy, Lute Olson Award) and has been A-10 Player of the Week five times in conference play.
• Nate Santos was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team.  UD finished second in Charleston.  He was also named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 20.
• Santos needed 10 games to match what he scored in two years at Pitt (116 points in 54 G).
• Koby Brea leads the nation in 3-pt. FG% (min. 2.5/game.).  Brea is shooting .491 (78-159).
• As a team, Dayton is eighth in D-I in 3-pt. FG% (.393, 251-638).  The school record is .392.
• Brea is third at UD in career 3-pt. FG% (.426, 197-465).  Norm Grevey is second (.432).
• Kobe Elvis was named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week after scoring 27 points in the UC win.  He was 14-for-14 from the line in that game, the third-best single-game performance at UD.
• Elvis missed his first free throw of the season, and made his next 37, breaking old the UD record held by Damon Goodwin and Darrell Davis.
• Javon Bennett leads the A-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5) by nearly a full assist (2.6).
• Enoch Cheeks has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games (twice in first 20).
• Dayton leads the A-10 in scoring defense (64.6 ppg.).  Richmond is second (65.9).
• Malachi Smith was injured seven minutes into the opener, and after successful surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee, is out for the rest of the year.
