Junior Forward Recognized By The A-10 For The Fifth Time In Conference Play

WASHINGTON, D.C. – University of Dayton forward DaRon Holmes II has been named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Week for his performances in two Flyer wins last week.

The 6-foot-10 junior from Goodyear, Ariz., averaged a double-double — 26.5 points and 10.5 rebounds — in wins over Duquesne and Fordham.  He had 24 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, two assists and two steals against Duquesne on Tuesday, and 29 points, 10 rebounds and three assists versus Fordham on Saturday.

Holmes scored 20 of his points in the second half of the Fordham win — 11 of Dayton’s first 13 points and nine of Dayton’s final 12 (including the last five).  Dayton never trailed after the 14:50 mark of the second half, but after each of the three times Fordham came behind to tie the game after that, Holmes scored a bucket to take back the lead.

He had his third “Triple DaRon” of the season on Saturday — 29 points, 10 rebounds, 12 fouls drawn.

During the week, Holmes was also named to the Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year Midseason Team as one of the top 30 candidates for the honor from the Atlanta Tip-Off Club.

Holmes was honored for the fifth time since conference play began eight weeks ago.  He leads the A-10 in scoring (20.0) and UD in rebounding (8.0).  He is the only player in the league’s Top Five in scoring, rebounding, FG%, and blocked shots.

He is the only player in D-I who has more than 50 blocks, 50 dunks and 50 assists.  Holmes has 55, 56 and 63 respectively.   Holmes also has 24 threes and is shooting .369 (24-65) from deep.  He had just seven threes in his first two years at UD.

Dayton is 21-4 overall and tied for first in the A-10 with Loyola Chicago at 11-2.  UD was ranked 16th in the AP poll and 18th in the Coaches poll last week.

The Flyers are at George Mason on Wednesday.  Game time is 7 p.m. ET.
