COLUMBUS, Ohio – After hitting .412 over five games in her collegiate debut and helping Ohio State win the Felsberg Invitational championship last weekend, Ohio State freshman Jasmyn Burns in this week’s Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced today.

Burns, a native of Menifee, Calif., hit three home runs – including a grand slam in a 13-0 five-inning win over Southeast Missouri State – and drove in a team-high nine runs. In Sunday’s weekend finale, her home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Ohio State a 7-2 lead over host FIU and proved to be the winning runs in a 7-5 victory.

The weekend started for Burns with her first home run in Friday night’s 6-1 victory over FIU. The next day, she went a combined 3-for-6 with five RBI in victories over Southeast Missouri State and Stony Brook. And on Sunday, she finished off the weekend by going 2-for-3 with a home run, double and three RBI.

Ohio State (4-1) won four consecutive games last weekend and was aided by an offense that had a .406 team batting average. Much of that success was aided by timely hitting: Of the 37 runs that were batted in, 24 of them came with two outs. In the circle, senior Allison Smith went 3-0 with a 0.81 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. Classmate Emily Ruck pitched her third career no-hitter on Saturday night in a six-inning win over Stony Brook.

The Buckeyes are back in action this weekend in Leesburg, Fla. at The Spring Games. Action gets underway on Friday with contests against Coastal Carolina (noon) and UC Riverside (2:30 p.m.). All of Ohio State’s game will be streamed live on FloSoftball.
