DAYTON – Trey Calvin became just the second Wright State men’s basketball player to reach 2,000 career points on Thursday night as five players finished in double digits scoring in a 92-85 home victory over Detroit Mercy inside the Nutter Center.
Wright State (14-11, 9-5 Horizon) now turns its attention to a Saturday contest against Oakland, who fell 99-89 in overtime Thursday night at NKU. Saturday’s game is a 7 p.m. tipoff and is the Raiders’ annual Military Appreciation game.
Calvin reached the milestone with a pullup jumper at the 5:25 mark of the first half, joining Bill Edwards (1990-93, 2,303 career points) as the only Raiders to reach the mark, while Calvin became the 15th player to reach 2,000 points in Horizon League history and is now the first Wright State player in the HL’s 2,000-point club.
Calvin finished with 18 points on Thursday night and now has 2,012 career points and counting – 212 points behind Edwards for the all-time Raider mark.
Wright State used a 24-4 scoring run over a 10-minute stretch in the first half to build a double-digit advantage and take a 50-32 lead into the half. Detroit Mercy (0-25, 0-14 Horizon) tallied 12 of the first 17 points to open the second half and pull the game close down the stretch. The visitors continued to chip away and pulled within three at 72-69 with 6:55 remaining, but the Raiders responded with six of the next 10 points to keep control.
The Raiders were 23-of-26 from the free throw line in the win and 17-of-19 in the second half as the Raiders closed the night making six of their final seven free throws down the stretch.
Alex Huibregtse joined Calvin with 18 points, including 11 in the first half, while Huibregtse added five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Tanner Holden added 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds, while AJ Braun chipped in 11 points and four boards and Brandon Noel had 11 points and six rebounds.
Wright State shot 59 percent from the floor overall (31-of-53) with 16 assists on those made baskets, while the Raiders hit seven three-pointers (7-of-17, 41 percent). Detroit Mercy connected at 60 percent overall (31-of-52) and was 12-of-23 (52 percent) from three-range. The visitors were 69 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.
The Raiders outrebounded Detroit Mercy 33-14, grabbing 21 defensive boards and 12 offensive rebounds.
Marcus Tankersley finished with 29 points to lead four Detroit Mercy players in double figures in the loss, as the visitors tallied all their scoring via the starting lineup.
