Dayton Flyers News: #16 Men’s Basketball Plays At La Salle On Tonight at 6:30 PM

DAYTON — The  University of Dayton men’s basketball team, ranked 16th in the AP poll and 17th in the Coaches poll, travels to Philadelphia on Tuesday to play La Salle.  Game time is 6:30 p.m. ET.

The game will be carried by WHIO Radio, and streamed on ESPN+.  Streaming audio, video and live stats are available at DaytonFlyers.com.

Dayton, 15-2 overall, improved to 5-0 in the Atlantic 10 and won its 12th straight game Saturday over Rhode island 96-62.  Javon Bennett led UD with a UD-best 22 points (8-9 FG, 4-5 3-pt.) along with five assists and two steals.  DaRon Holmes II had 21 points (despite resting the final 14:53) and Koby Brea had 15 (5-7 3-pt.). UD had 24 assists and two turnovers.

UD enters the week tied for first in the A-10 with Richmond.  The Flyers have risen to 15th in the NET.

• Dayton was the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10 in the annual vote of the league’s coaches and selected media.  The Flyers received 20 of the 25 first-place votes cast.
• UD’s 11-game win streak is its longest since 20 in 2019-20. It is currently third in D-I.
• DaRon Holmes II was named Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He was the only player on the first team and the defensive team.
• Holmes was on three prestigious preseason watch lists — Atlanta Tip-Off Club’s Naismith Award, the Los Angeles Athletic Club’s John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Karl Malone Award.
• Holmes leads the A-10 in scoring (19.4) and UD in rebounding (7.6).  He is the only player in the league’s Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, FG%, 3-pt. FG% and blocked shots.
• Holmes is now the Dayton career record holder for blocked shots (185) and dunks (213).
• He is the only player in D-I who has more than 35 blocks, 35 dunks and 35 assists (as of 1/14).  Holmes has 38, 42 and 44 respectively.   Holmes also has 18 threes and is shooting .439 (18-41) from deep.  He had a total of seven made threes in his first two seasons at UD.
• Holmes was named the National Player of the Week by NCAA March Madness after a 33-point, 12-rebounds game at Duquesne, and has been A-10 Player of the Week three times.
• Nate Santos was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team.  UD finished second in Charleston.  He was also named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 20.
• Santos needed 10 games to match what he scored in two years at Pitt (116 points in 54 G).
• Koby Brea leads the nation in 3-pt. FG% (min. 2.5/game.).  Brea is shooting .495 (51-103).
• As a team, Dayton is third in D-I in 3-pt. FG% (.408, 168-412).  The school record is .392.
• Brea is fourth at UD in career 3-pt. FG% (.419, 175-418).  Negele Knight is third (.425).
• Kobe Elvis was named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week after scoring 27 points in the UC win.  He was 14-for-14 from the line in that game, the third-best single-game performance at UD.
• Elvis missed his first free throw of the season, and made his next 37, breaking old the UD record held by Damon Goodwin and Darrell Davis. Elvis is four FTM short of being ranked.
• Malachi Smith was injured seven minutes into the opener.  He is out for the rest of 2023-24.
