#21/#23 Dayton Flyers ready to host Rhode Island in 12:30 PM Matinee Saturday on USA Network

DAYTON — The  University of Dayton men’s basketball team, ranked 21st in the AP poll and 23rd in the Coaches poll, is home again on Saturday, hosting Rhode island.  Game time is 12:30 p.m. ET.

The game will be carried by WHIO Radio, televised on the USA Network and streamed on the NBC Sports App. Streaming audio, video and live stats are available at DaytonFlyers.com.

Dayton, 14-2 overall, improved to 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 and won its 11th straight game Tuesday over Saint Louis 70-65.  DaRon Holmes II had his fourth double-double in the last eight games with 29 points and 14 rebounds.  “Deuce” scored 25 of his 29 points in the second half.  Five other Flyers scored at least six points.  Enoch Cheeks and Koby Brea each had nine.

• Dayton was the preseason favorite in the Atlantic 10 in the annual vote of the league’s coaches and selected media.  The Flyers received 20 of the 25 first-place votes cast.
• UD’s 11-game win streak is its longest since 20 in 2019-20. It is currently third in D-I.
• DaRon Holmes II was named Preseason First Team All-Atlantic 10 and to the Preseason All-Defensive Team.  He was the only player on the first team and the defensive team.
• Holmes was on three prestigious preseason watch lists — Atlanta Tip-Off Club’s Naismith Award, the Los Angeles Athletic Club’s John R. Wooden Award and the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s Karl Malone Award.
• Holmes leads the A-10 in scoring (19.4) and UD in rebounding (7.7).  He is the only player in the league’s Top 10 in scoring, rebounding, FG%, 3-pt. FG% and blocked shots.
• Holmes is now the Dayton career record holder for blocked shots (182) and dunks (211).
• He is the only player in D-I who has more than 35 blocks, 35 dunks and 35 assists (as of 1/14).  Holmes has 35, 40 and 41 respectively.   Holmes also has 17 threes and is shooting .444 (17-39) from deep.  He had a total of seven made threes in his first two seasons at UD.
• Holmes was named the National Player of the Week by NCAA March Madness after a 33-point, 12-rebounds game at Duquesne, and has been A-10 Player of the Week twice.
• Nate Santos was named to the Charleston Classic All-Tournament Team.  UD finished second in Charleston.  He was also named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 20.
• Santos needed 10 games to match what he scored in two years at Pitt (116 points in 54 G).
• Koby Brea leads the nation in 3-pt. FG% (min. 2.5/game.).  Brea is shooting .479 (46-96).
• As a team, Dayton is ninth in D-I in 3-pt. FG% (.395, 152-385).  The school record is .392.
• Brea is fourth at UD in career 3-pt. FG% (.414, 170-411).  Negele Knight is third (.425).
• Kobe Elvis was named the A-10 Co-Player of the Week after scoring 27 points in the UC win.  He was 14-for-14 from the line in that game, the third-best single-game performance at UD.
• Elvis missed his first free throw of the season, and made his next 37, breaking old the UD record held by Damon Goodwin and Darrell Davis. Elvis is two FTM short of being ranked.
• Malachi Smith was injured seven minutes into the opener.  He is out for the rest of 2023-24.
