No. 13 Mount Union too much for Capital Comets

By R.G. Mason

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Capital University men’s basketball team will head to the holiday midseason break with a record of 8-3 overall and 2-2 in the OAC after falling 79-68 on the road at No. 13 ranked Mount Union on Saturday afternoon.

The Purple Raiders improved to 8-1 on the year and 3-1 in the conference after the win.

As a team, the Comets shot the ball at a truly efficient 52.7% – a far superior field goal percentage than the Purple Raiders, but the difference proved to be the 20 turnovers committed by Capital. Mount Union used those 20 free possessions to cash in 29 points on the day.

Another key part in the game that saw Capital slip behind at a crucial moment of the game proved to be the final 1:31 of the first half. The Comets had just closed the score to 33-31 thanks to a jump shot from Alex Eyink. However, Mount ended the half on a 10-2 run that saw them take a 10-point lead into the locker room.

That halftime spread for the Purple Raiders proved to be enough to keep the hot-shooting Comets at bay for the remainder of the game.

THE NUMBERS
Baden Forup led the team with a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double – his third double-double of the season and second in as many games. Overall, Forup shot 8-of-12 from the floor and added in one assist and one block.

McKane Finkenbine was close behind, finishing with 14 points. He added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Carter Combs finished with eight points, five assists, three steals and a rebound as well. His eight points pushed him over the 500-point mark throughout his collegiate career as he now stands with 505 points.

Justin Nixon also added eight points off the bench and was followed by Dom Moegerle’s six points as well. Nate Gerber (5), Daryl Cooper (4), Alex Eyink (3), Ryan Suever (2), and Brody Gowen (2) also scored points on the day as well.
