Columbus Crew News: Defender Steven Moreira Selected to Cape Verde’s Final Roster for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

COLUMBUS – Columbus Crew defender Steven Moreira has been selected to represent Cape Verde in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to kick off in Cote d’Ivoire on Jan. 13, 2024.

 

Moreira and Cape Verde have been drawn into Group B and open against Ghana on Jan. 14, before facing Mozambique on Jan. 19 and closing out the group stage against Egypt on Jan. 22. All of Cape Verde’s Group B matches will take place at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

The 29-year-old made his senior international debut for Cape Verde in a friendly against Algeria on Oct. 12, 2023. Born in Noisy-le-Grand, France, Moreira represented France at various youth levels including the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, helping earn a second-place finish.

 

The Crew’s 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, Moreira tied for a team best 34 appearances in the regular season and registered five assists. Moreira led MLS in total accurate passes with 1,895 and appeared in all six of the Crew’s postseason matches, logging one assist, en route to the Club’s third MLS Cup in franchise history.
