Flyers Shoot 52% From The Field & 96% From The Line In The Second Half

CINCINNATI – In front of a crowd of 12,547 that had a decided Dayton lean, the University of Dayton men’s basketball team downed Cincinnati 82-68 in the Hoops Classic presented by altafiber and CareSource.

After UD pulled to within four points at the start of the second half, Dayton pushed its lead out as far as 18 by making 11 of 21 field goals (.524) and 22 of 23 free throws (.957) in the final 20 minutes.

DaRon Holmes II (28 points), Kobe Elvis (27) and Koby Brea (12) scored 67 of the Flyers’ 82 points.

Both teams are 8-2 on the season.

GAME SUMMARY

1st Half – Dayton 35, Cincinnati 29
•    UC scored the first five points of the game.
•    DaRon Holmes II got the Flyers on the board with a triple at the at the 18:38 mark.
•    Dayton took its first lead (10-8) with 16:03 to go on a Koby Brea three-pointer.
•    It remained a one-score game for the next eight minutes until a Koby Elvis layup made the score 24-19.
•    UC scored six straight to lead 25-24 with 5:09 left in the half.
•    Elvis in the lane put the Flyers back up at the 4:20 mark.
•    A 7-2 Dayton spurt in the last 2:02 send the Flyers to the locker room ahead 35-29.

2nd Half – Dayton 82, Cincinnati 68
•    UC scored the first bucket of the second half to make it a four-point game, but UD scored the next seven (five by Elvis) to make it a double-digit lead (42-31 with 17:32 left).
•    The Bearcats got back to within seven, only to have the Flyers score another seven in a row (five by Nate Santos) to take a 53-39 lead 29th 13:48 to go.
•    Dayton’s biggest lead came at the 9:02 mark when a pair of Elvis free throws made it UD 63, UC 45.
•    The Bearcats cut that lead in half over the next five minutes and 47 seconds (71-62), but a Holmes dunk at 2:53, and a Holmes dagger three at 1:55 essentially sealed the game.
•    The Flyers made all six of their free throws in the final 78 seconds to grab the win.

BY THE NUMBERS
•    28 – DaRon Holmes II led UD with 28 points (10-17 FG, 3-5 3-pt., 5-7 FT)).
•    27 – Kobe Elvis scored a career-high 27 points, one game after setting a new high with 24 in the Troy game.
•    14 – Elvis was 14-for-14 from the line.  He was fouled a team-high eight times. He also led UD with three assists.
•    5 – Holmes blocked five shots in the game, four in the second half.
•    14 – Koby Brea was a team-best +14 in the game.  He scored 12 points (4-5 3-pt.) and also grabbed five rebounds.
•    8 – Nate Santos led the Flyers with eight rebounds.

•    93% – The Flyers shot .933 (28-30) from the line in the game.
