Capital Comets News: Football Honors Seniors on Senior Day in loss to Marietta, 45-14

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University football team took to the field of Bernlohr Stadium for the final time in the 2023 season on Saturday, hosting Marietta for a Senior Day matchup. In the end it was the Pioneers taking the game 45-14, building off of a very strong 35-point first half.

Capital falls to 1-8 on the year, 1-7 in the OAC.

Marietta moves to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

SENIOR DAY
Per tradition for the final home game of the season, Capital hosted a special pre-game ceremony to honor its football and cheerleading seniors. Mike Emore, James CurtisBen EversonDrew EngleChris JohnsonNick FisanickRicky ScottGarrett AndersonDamian Loya, and Drew Montoya, along with Kaylee Hart, Lydia Pack, Hannah Riley, and Sydney Shadburn were all honored.

THE NUMBERS
Ben Everson threw for two touchdowns and 113 yards on eight completions.

Nate Younker was the leading receiver making four catches for 74 yards, which included a 43-yard touchdown.

Drew Montoya made two catches for 10 yards, while Bennett Zerby and Josh Kucker each hauled in a catch. Kucker’s reception was the first of his career and also marked his first career touchdown.
On the ground, Troi McClary was the leading rusher, going for 33 yards on six carries. Albree Grose toted the ball seven times for 24 yards. Senior Drew Engle got one rush in his return from injury, dashing six yards.

Senior linebackers James Curtis and Nick Fisanick made the most of their senior days, both recording career-highs in tackles, 18 each. Curtis’ came in the form of four solo tackles and 14 assists. On the other end, Fisanick scored six solo tackles and 12 assists. Fisanick has now officially surpassed 300 career tackles, sitting at 313 heading into the last week of the season. Curtis – who surpassed the 200 career tackle mark last week now sits at 221 stops.

Fisanick also recorded a forced fumble that was recovered by teammate Bryson Roberts. The forced fumble marked the third of his career. Roberts’ recovery was the second of his young career.
Chris Johnson made eight tackles and was followed closely by Jaylan Anderson (7), Owen Beatty (6) and Griffin McKinney (6).

Tyler Terrell knocked a career-long 57-yard punt early in the first quarter, surpassing his previous career-high of 54 yards. In total, Terrell sent six punts for 240 yards – an average of 40 yards per punt. Terrell was also good on both of his PAT tries.

UP NEXT 
The Comets will head off to Heidelberg next week for the final game of the season. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
