EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern football Interim Head Coach David Braun has announced the addition of veteran head coach Skip Holtz as Special Assistant to the Head Coach on Thursday. At Northwestern, Holtz will assist in a myriad of responsibilities including game preparation, day-to-day operations of the program and advising Coach Braun.

The new role will not interfere with Holtz’s current position as Head Coach of the United States Football League’s Birmingham Stallions.

“With his many years of head coaching experience and tremendous knowledge of the game, Coach Holtz will be an invaluable resource for myself, our coaching staff and student-athletes during the upcoming season,” said Interim Head Coach David Braun. “I’m thrilled to welcome Coach Holtz to Evanston and can’t wait to begin working with him.”

A head coach for 24 seasons with a career record of 169-124 across both the collegiate and professional levels. Holtz most recently guided the Stallions to back-to-back league championships in the rebirthed USFL, with a combined record of 17-3 (4-0 in the playoffs).

Coach Holtz added: “I love coaching football and am passionate about leading young men to achieve their very best. This is a unique opportunity to help these outstanding student-athletes and partner with Coach Braun to do anything I can to help Northwestern football in 2023.”

Holtz served as head coach at UConn (1994-98), East Carolina (2005-09), USF (2010-12) and Louisiana Tech (2013-21) for a total of 22 seasons. He posted a collegiate career mark of 152-121 with two conference championships, 12 bowl game appearances and one FCS Playoff berth.

During his most recent college stop at Louisiana Tech, Holtz guided the Bulldogs to bowl victories in six straight seasons, culminating with a 10-3 record and a victory over Miami (Fla.) in the 2019 Independence Bowl.

Northwestern will kick off the 2023 season at 11 a.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 3 at Rutgers. The game will air on CBS.
