The New York Yankees today announced that Dillon Lawson has been relieved of his duties as hitting coach. The announcement was made by Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Cashman.

“It has been well documented that I have been reluctant in the past to make changes to our coaching staff in the middle of a season,” said Cashman. “I am a big believer that successes and failures are collective efforts.  However, I ultimately felt that a change was needed and that a new voice overseeing our hitting operations would give us the best chance to perform closer to our capabilities as we move forward into the second half of our season.

“I want thank Dillon for all his efforts. He has a bright baseball mind that will continue to lead to a long and fruitful baseball career.”

Lawson, 38, was named the Yankees’ hitting coach prior to the 2022 season and has spent parts of five seasons in the Yankees organization, spending his first three seasons (2019-21) as the Yankees’ minor league hitting coordinator. Prior to joining the Yankees, Lawson spent two seasons with the Houston Astros organization, serving as the hitting coach for Single-A Quad Cities in 2018 and short-season Single-A Tri-City in 2016. In between his two stints with Houston, he was the hitting coach at the University of Missouri in 2017. Lawson began his coaching career on the collegiate side, serving as an assistant coach at Lindenwood University (Mo.) from 2007-09, at Morehead State University (Ky.) from 2009-12 and at Southeast Missouri State University from 2012-15.

A replacement has not been named at this time.
