NY Mets News: KODAI SENGA ADDED TO NL ALL-STAR TEAM

FLUSHING, N.Y., July 8, 2023 – Major League Baseball today announced that RHP Kodai Senga was added to the 2023 National League All-Star team. The 93rd All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, July 11 in Seattle.

Senga, 30, becomes the fifth rookie to be named to an All-Star team in franchise history, joining Tom Seaver (1967), Jerry Koosman (1968), Dwight Gooden (1984) and Pete Alonso (2019). Additionally, Senga becomes the eighth Japanese-born rookie selected to an All-Star team, joining Hideo Nomo (1995), Ichiro Suzuki (2001), Hideki Matsui (2003), Hideki Okajima (2007), Kosuke Fukudome (2008), Yu Darvish (2012) and Masahiro Tanaka (2014).

Senga is 7-5 with a 3.31 ERA (33 ER/89.2 IP) in 16 starts this year. He ranks sixth in the majors and third in the NL in ERA among qualified rookies. Senga has recorded 113 strikeouts through his first 16 career major league games, that is the fourth-most by a Mets pitcher in team history. Only Gooden (125), Matt Harvey (116) and Nolan Ryan (115) had more in their first 16 career starts. His 113 strikeouts are the fourth-most by a Japanese-born pitcher through 16 career games, trailing only Nomo (139), Tanaka (127) and Darvish (117).
