Angels closer earns first career All-Star selection

ANAHEIM – Major League Baseball announced today that Carlos Estévez has been selected to the 2023 American League All-Star team. This marks his first career All-Star selection and he becomes the first Angels relief pitcher to be named an All-Star since Jordan Walden in 2011.

In 35 games for the Angels this season, he has posted a 2-1 record, 1.85 ERA (34 IP – 7 ER) and 42 strikeouts and has converted all 21 of his save opportunities. The 21 saves rank fourth in the American League. Additionally, he established a new Angels record for consecutive save opportunities converted to begin a season, breaking the previous mark of 19 by Hall of Famer Lee Smith.

Estévez is joined on the 2023 All-Star Game roster by Angels teammates Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout and Angels Director of Sports Medicine/Head Certified Athletic Trainer Mike Frostad. Ohtani was selected via fan voting as the starting designated hitter for the A.L. and was also selected to the team as a pitcher via the player vote. He is the only player in Major League history to be selected to the All-Star Game as both a position player and a pitcher, and has now been selected at both positions for a third consecutive season. Trout was selected to his 11th career All-Star Game and earned his 10th consecutive start via fan voting. Frostad was selected to his first All-Star Game as a member of the A.L. athletic training staff.

The 2023 Major League Baseball All-Star Game is scheduled to be played Tuesday, July 11 at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
