NATIONALS HISTORY

July 5 (9-6)
2018 – The Nationals topped the Marlins, 14-12, in dramatic, come-from-behind fashion. Trailing 9-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth inning, the Nationals plated 14 unanswered runs to pull away from the Marlins. Washington’s nine-run deficit overcome was the largest in Nationals history (2005-pres.) and matched
the largest in franchise (MON/WSH) history. The win was powered by Trea Turner, who went 3-for-5 with
two home runs (including the go-ahead grand slam), eight RBI and three runs scored. His eight RBI were
tied for the most by a leadoff hitter in Major League history and were tied for second most in a game by any
hitter in Nationals history (2005-pres.).

MIKE RIZZO
Nationals President of Baseball Operations and
General Manager Mike Rizzo enters his 15th season
as the head of Washington’s baseball operation
and his 40th season in professional baseball…He
enters the 2023 season as the second-longest tenured General Manager in Major League Baseball…
Under Rizzo’s leadership, the Nationals won the
World Series in 2019, earning four National League
East titles (2012, 2014, 2016, 2017) and one Wild
Card berth (2019)… Rizzo was recently inducted
into both the Triton College Alumni Wall of Fame
and the Italian American Baseball Foundation Hall
of Fame.

DAVE MARTINEZ
Sixth-year manager Dave Martinez was named the
seventh field manager in Nationals history on Oct.
30, 2017…He is the longest-tenured and winningest
manager in Nationals history (2005-pres.)…Martinez has led the club through a steady, unwavering
approach, consistent strategy and never-ending
positivity and support for players…That includes
an improbable run to the 2019 World Series
Championship…A 16-year Major League outfielder,
Martinez joined the Nationals after 10 seasons as
a Major League coach in Chicago (2015–17) and
Tampa Bay (2008–14)

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
Jessica Camerato – Nationals.com (July 4)
“I was looking for a comfortable pitch that I could
make hard contact with and drive that run in,”
Meneses said. “[Cruz] left, fortunately, a splitter
that hung a little bit, and I was able to connect and
drive the run in.”
@MarkZuckerman – MASNSports.com (July 4)
Nats are on the board in the 3rd, thanks to CJ
Abrams’ leadoff double and a couple of productive outs from Derek Hill and Lane Thomas. They
trail 5-1.

THE STORY OF HIS CUTTER
As told to Jesse Dougherty of the Washington Post in a recent story: “At the start of spring training, Gray debuted a cutter he learned from Erasmo Ramírez,
who drew his grip on a baseball Gray practiced with until he lost it at the gym during the offseason. Gray joked that some Florida teenager could be throwing
Ramírez’s cutter in high school games. Yet by the time he misplaced the ball, Gray knew where to put his fingers. The pitch felt like a natural complement to
his slider, moving more side-to-side while his gyroscopic slider drops almost straight down.”
