MIAMI, Fla., July, 5, 2023 – The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-handed pitcher Adam Wainwright and catcher Andrew Knizner (KIZZ-ner) on the Injured List prior to today’s game in Miami.  Catcher Iván Herrera, right-handed pitcher Dakota Hudson and left-handed pitcher Zack Thompson were recalled from Triple-A Memphis and will be active for tonight’s game.  Right-handed pitcher James Naile was optioned to Memphis.

Wainwright, 41, was placed on the 15-day Injured List with a right shoulder strain.  This season, Wainwright has compiled a 3-4 record with a 7.66 ERA over 11 starts.  It marked his highest ERA since his rookie season when he appeared in just two games.  The veteran right-hander exited yesterday’s game in Miami after 3.1 innings.  He is currently two wins shy of becoming the third Cardinals pitcher in franchise history to win 200 games.

Knizner, 28, was placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right groin area injury after being struck by a foul ball in the bottom of the 4th inning of yesterday’s game in Miami.  He finished the inning and was removed from the game.  Knizner was batting .227 with a career-high five home runs and 15 RBI over 35 games this season.

Herrera, 23, was on the Cardinals Taxi Squad to London in late June and was on the active roster but did not play in a game.  He made his Major League debut in 2022 and appeared in 11 games.  This season in Memphis, Herrera is batting .308 with eight home runs and 44 RBI over 50 games.  He was named Cardinals Minor League Player of the Month in May.

Hudson, 28, was recently added to the Cardinals roster for last Saturday’s doubleheader against the New York Yankees and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.  He made his Major League debut in 2018 and has pitched in six Major League seasons posting career marks of 32-17 with a 3.58 ERA in 97 games with 67 starts.

Thompson, 25, the Cardinals first round draft pick in 2019 out of the University of Kentucky, was on the Opening Day roster and made 11 relief appearances with a 1-2 record and 4.63 ERA before being optioned to Memphis on May 2.  He started nine games (10 app.) in Triple-A with a 1-4 record and 9.09 ERA, striking out 38 batters in 32.2 innings.

Naile, 30, was optioned to Memphis after making two appearances in the last four days.
