FROM WIKIPEDIA COMMONS

Canada Day (FrenchFête du Canada), formerly known as Dominion Day (FrenchFête du Dominion), is the national day of Canada. A federal statutory holiday, it celebrates the anniversary of Canadian Confederation which occurred on July 1, 1867, with the passing of the British North America Act, 1867, when the three separate colonies of the United CanadasNova Scotia, and New Brunswick were united into a single dominion within the British Empire called Canada.

Originally called Dominion Day (FrenchLe Jour de la Confédération), the holiday was renamed in 1982, the same year that the Canadian constitution was patriated by the Canada Act, 1982, which severed the vestiges of legal dependence on the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Canada Day celebrations take place throughout the country, as well as in various locations around the world attended by Canadians living abroad.

TODAY’S ALMANAC

Question of the Day

When is the best time to harvest okra?

Okra should be picked a few days after the flowers fall off. If you pick okra daily, the plants should produce until frost. Okra is in its prime when the pods are soft and the seeds are no more than half-grown. Cook okra at once, or freeze, can, or dry it promptly. Leaving the pods on the vine too long will make them woody.

Advice of the Day

Start root vegetables cooking in cold water, everything else in hot.

Home Hint of the Day

To store those unwieldy plastic gallon jugs on their way to being recycled, tie a length of string to the handle of one jug and thread the remaining jugs on the string. Make a loop in the other end and hang it on a nail.

Word of the Day

February

From the Latin word februa, “to cleanse.” The Roman Februalia was a month of purification and atonement.

Puzzle of the Day

How did the farmer count his cows?

With a “cowculator.”
