Drake Bulldogs Men’s Basketball News: DeVries Named Finalist for Hugh Durham, Jim Phelan National Awards

Darian DeVries has been nominated for the Hugh Durham Award (Mid-Major Coach of the Year) and the Jim Phelan Award (National Division-I Coach of the Year).

BOSTON, Mass. – Drake men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries was named a finalist for the 2022-23 Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year and Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year, CollegeInsider.com announced on Tuesday, March 7.

The Hugh Durham Award is presented annually to the top Division I mid-major coach in college basketball. DeVries won the Hugh Durham Award in 2019.

Coaches of teams in the following conferences are eligible for the award: America East, ASUN, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, MEAC, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, SWAC, Summit, Sun Belt, WAC, West Coast.

The Jim Phelan Award is presented annually to the nation’s top Division I coach.

DeVries has led Drake to its second NCAA Tournament appearance in three years after a 77-51 win over Bradley in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title game on Sunday, March 5.

Under DeVries’ leadership, the Bulldogs have won at least 20 games in five consecutive seasons for the first time in program history including three straight seasons of 25 wins or more. With a current overall record of 122-47, DeVries already ranks second all-time at Drake in career victories. He is a two-time MVC Coach of the Year (2019, 2021).

The recipient of the 2023 Hugh Durham and Jim Phelan awards will be announced in March, in Houston, the site of the men’s NCAA Basketball Championship.
