Holmes II, Camara lead Dayton to 20th win on Senior Night, beating La Salle 77-53

DAYTON – The University of Dayton men’s basketball team came away with a win on Tuesday night, also Senior Night, against the La Salle Explorers. The Flyers beat the Explorers by a score of 77-53 and have one game remaining before next week’s Atlantic 10 tournament.

Team captain Toumani Camara, who could graduate this summer, was honored in pre-game ceremonies.

Dayton is now 20-10 overall and 12-5 in the Atlantic 10. With the win, the Flyers have clinched a double-bye in next week’s Atlantic 10 tournament. 


First Half – Dayton 33, La Salle 27

  • Kobe Elvis started thescoring for the Flyers, hitting a three-pointer on their first possession.
  • The Flyers started the game on a 13-2 run,which included eight points, and two threes, from Toumani Camara.
  • During the run, the Flyers held the Explorers to 25% shooting from the field and forced three turnovers.
  • Up to the 12-minute media timeout, the Flyers were shooting 73% from the field including making eight of their last nine shots. 
  • DaRon Holmes II broke free on the fast break and throws down a dunk to increase the Flyer lead to 26-14 with seven minutes remaining in the half.
  • Dayton’s largest lead was 16 (24-8 with 9:18 to go until halftime), but the Explorers went on a run of their own to close the gap going back to the locker room.
  • Camara led the team with 10 points heading into halftime.
  • Dayton committed only four turnovers in the half compared to La Salle’s eight.

Second Half – Dayton 77, La Salle 53

  • Holmes scored the first field goal of the half with a tip-in to extend the lead to 36-27.
  • Dayton built on their halftime lead, heading into the first media timeout up, 42-32.
  • La Salle remained unfazed as they cut the lead down to six points with 12:51 remaining. 
  • Koby Brea hit a three coming out of the timeout to put the Flyers back up nine. 
  • The Flyers went on a quick 7-0 run heading into the eight minute media timeout to regain a 14-point lead (59-45).
  • Dayton made six of their first seven three-point attempts to extend their lead to 66-47 with 5:15 remaining.
  • UD shot 64% (16-25) from the field, and 63.6% (7-11) from deep in the second half.
     

  BY THE NUMBERS

  • 52% – The Flyers shot 52% from three point range (12-23) compared to La Salle’s 29% (7-24).
  • 12 – Dayton forced 12 turnovers in the game while only turning it over eight times themselves.
  • 3 – Three Flyers scored in double figures:  DaRon Holmes II recorded a team-high 16 points (and added 10 rebounds for his 15th career double-double). Toumani Camara added 14 points (4-5 FG) and Mustapha Amzil had 10 (5-6 FG).  Holmes is just five points away from 1,000 points at UD.
  • 18 – Dayton recorded 18 assists to LaSalle’s eight. Malachi Smith led with 10 (with one turnover) Holmes had a career-high five (with zero turnovers).
  • 21 – UD had 21 second chance points tonight compared to La Salle’s 12, despite being out-rebounded by six overall (37-31), and by 10 on the offensive end (18-8).
