Koby Brea Leads The Flyers With Six Made Threes And A Season-High 18 Points

TEAM STATISTICS

DAYTON — The University of Dayton men’s basketball team won against the Richmond Spiders on Saturday afternoon at UD Arena by the score of 86-60.  . The Flyers made their last 11 shots of the first half and the first four of the second half to take total control.

Koby Brea led the scoring for the Flyers with 18 points, Malachi Smith was two assists short of a Dayton record with 13 assists, and DaRon Holmes II scored 17 points.  Toumani Camara added 16 points and Mustapha Amzil had 10.

UD improves to 15-8 overall and 7-3 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond falls to 11-12 overall and 4-6 in conference.

First Half — Dayton 43, Richmond 23

  • Richmond scored the first basket of the game off a layup.
  • Toumani Camara got the first bucket for the Flyers with a three-pointer off an assist from Malachi Smith.
  • Both teams started off ice cold as the score was 4-3 in favor of Richmond after five minutes of playing. Dayton was 1-for-10 from the field during this stretch.
  • R.J. Blakney snapped the 4:29 scoring drought which was immediately followed by back-to-back DaRon Holmes II dunks to give Dayton a 9-8 lead.
  • Flyers went on a 14-2 run over 5:30 of play as they extended the lead to 23-12.
  • Koby Brea caught fire as he hit four straight three-point attempts.
  • Flyers ended the half making their last 11 field goals, and ended the half with a commanding 43-23 lead against the Spiders.
  • Dayton had 21 bench points at the half, led by Brea’s 12.

Second Half – Dayton 86, Richmond 60

  • Flyers started the half strong on a 5-0 run with buckets coming from both Camara and Holmes II.
  • Dayton went 3-3 from beyond the arc in the first four minutes to extend the lead.
  • Flyers took a 36-point lead against the Spiders (73-36) after another Brea three-pointer.
  • Dayton maintained a comfortable lead over the Spiders as they traded buckets down the stretch. The Flyers led 81-53 with 3:54 remaining in the game.
  • After starting 1-10 from the three point line, the Flyers made 12 of their next 15 three point attempts.
  • The Flyers’ 43 second-half points lead them to a 26-point win over Richmond.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Dayton shot 100% from the free throw line (4-4) and 52% from beyond the arc (14-27).
  • The Flyers had four players in double digits led by Koby Brea’s 18 points (6 of 7 3-pt.). DaRon Holmes II (17 points), Toumani Camara (16), and Mustapha Amzil (10) were the other participants in the double-digit club tonight.
  • Brea’s second three of the night was the 100th of his college career.  
  • Brea also led the team in +/- at +30 for the game.
  • The Flyers outshot the Spiders 57% to 43% from the field and 52% to 22% from the three-point line.
  • Dayton only turned the ball over eight times after coming into the game averaging 13.6 per.
  • Dayton led the rebounding battle by grabbing 33 boards compared to Richmond’s 26.  Holmes led with nine.
  • The Flyers had 25 assists on 34 made baskets.  Smith’s 13 were a career high.
  • Smith was two assists shy of the UD single-game record held by Negele Knight in 1990 against Xavier.  Smith’s final assist in the game came at the 9:40 mark in the second half.
