CHICAGO (January 30, 2023) – Loyola University Chicago is back in action following nearly a week off on Tuesday, January 31, as the Ramblers head back on the road to take on Dayton. Tip-off inside UD Arena is set for 8 p.m. (CT) on CBS Sports Network, with Carter Blackburn and Pete Gillen calling the action. Tuesday’s game can also be heard on the Rambler Sports Network, with Jeff Hagedorn and Christian Thomas calling the action live from Dayton.

Last Time Out
Philip Alston scored a season-high 25 points as Loyola let a halftime lead slip away in a 72-58 loss at Duquesne this past Wednesday. Alston finished 8-for-15 from the field and connected on a career-high five 3-pointers in the effort. The Ramblers led by nine at the halftime break, but an early Duquesne run to open the second half brought the Dukes back into the contest. Duquesne would then score the final seven points of the game to pull away late.

Loyola-Dayton – The Series
Tuesday will mark the 49th meeting all-time between the Ramblers and Flyers, with Dayton owning a 33-15 edge in the series history. It has been almost 30 years since the two teams last met, with Loyola picking up a 59-56 road win at Dayton on Feb. 27, 1993 when the two teams were members of the  Midwestern Collegiate Conference. The two teams had met every year, expect one, between 1968 and 1993, Dayton’s final season as members of the MCC.

Scouting Dayton
Dayton is one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Flyers allow opponents to shoot just 38.7% from the field, tops in the A-10 and ninth nationally, while their 27.0% 3-point field goal defense is fourth best in the country. Dayton is allowing opposing teams to score just 60.3 points per game, the 10th-lowest scoring defense among Division I programs. DaRon Holmes II leads four Dayton players averaging 10+ points per game with a team-leading 18.3 per contest, third-best in the conference. Holmes is also a defensive threat, leading the conference with 42 total blocks this year and ranking second on the team (third in the A-10) with 8 rebounds a game. Anthony Grant is in his sixth season at the helm of the Dayton program, having led the Flyers to winning records in each of the last five seasons. He was the consensus National Coach of the Year in 2019-20 after leading the Flyers to a 20-2 record and a presumptive No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament that was canceled due to the pandemic.
