Otterbein Men’s Basketball last win 1 21 2023: Led by Cam Evans & Dallas Patrick Cardinals Dominate Rivalry Rematch, Beat Capital 70-59; Sweeps season series

Dallas Patrick

BEXLEY, Ohio – Bust out the brooms… because the Otterbein men’s basketball team made it a clean sweep of the regular-season series with rival Capital Saturday night across town.

The Cardinals, beating the Comets by double digits for the second time in seven weeks, opened the rematch with a sizeable run and eventually rested with a 70-59 decision.

STANDOUT STRETCHES:

  • Otterbein opened the game on a 10-0 run and then held a 17-4 cushion not long after.

  • Capital responded with nine points in a row and eventually trailed 28-23 at the break, limiting the Cards to just 11 points after the middle mark of the frame.

  • The Cardinals received a trifecta from Dallas Patrick just 13 seconds into the second half and were on their way. Otterbein reopened a 13-point gap just a few minutes later thanks to another triple hit from Patrick (two first names).

  • An 18-7 scoring run across the midway point of the second half would break the game open, as a group of individuals from the Capital student section decided to leave the gym and were followed by their peers in the near future.

  • The Comets trailed by 17 with two minutes left but admirably fought until the end, shrinking the gap with a layup at the horn.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Head Coach Andy Winters, coming to Otterbein in 2019 after five years as an assistant at Capital, has now beaten his former employer and co-workers three of the last four meetings.

  • Cam Evans, the OAC’s leading scorer, dropped 19 points to spark four Cardinals in double figures. He also hauled in 10 rebounds for the second double-double of his career.

  • Patrick (16), Troy Scowden (12) and Julian Heckman (11) also benefited the offensive cause nicely. Heckman did all of his scoring in the first half before encountering foul trouble in the second.

  • Otterbein posted a 47-32 rebounding margin and 26-9 edge in bench scoring.

  • Both teams struggled from behind the arc, combining to go 12 of 54 across the evening.

  • The Cardinals shot 56% after halftime.

MOVING FORWARD:

  • Otterbein will carry The Oar back home to campus before hitting the road again middle of next week, traveling south to Marietta for a rematch with the Pioneers.
