Ohio Bobcats Men’s Basketball Set To Take on Florida in Victorinox Tampa Tip-Off Tonight

ATHENS, Ohio — The Ohio men’s basketball team (5-4) returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 14 when they head to Tampa, Fla. for a nationally televised matchup with Florida (6-4) in the Victorinox Tampa Tip-Off. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. The Bobcats matchup will be seen on ESPN2 where Kevin Fitzgerald and Mark Wise will have the call. 

The Bobcats’ matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield. Russ Eisenstein returns for his 15th season as the “Voice of the Bobcats” and will be joined by Ohio alum Rob Cornlius, who has been a part of the broadcasts for two decades. WXTQ (Power 105) in Athens returns as the 11-station network’s flagship.  

STORYLINES
• Ohio is coming off a thrilling 81-70 buzzer beater victory Sunday afternoon at Youngstown State. 
• This is the fourth all-time meeting between Ohio and Florida. 
• Florida leads the all-time series, 2-1. 
• The Bobcats and Gators last met on March 18, 2005 in the NCAA Tournament First Round, falling to Florida, 67-62. 
• Ohio and Florida also met in 1926, with Ohio winning 38-29, and Nov. 30, 1978 with Ohio falling, 96-61 in Gainesville. 
• Florida enters the matchup with Ohio with a 6-4 record. 
• Florida is coming off a 76-54 loss at the hands of fifth-ranked UConn on Dec. 7 in Gainesville. 
• Dwight Wilson III is coming off the buzzer beater at YSU on Dec. 11, helping him record his third double double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. 
• Ohio finally picked up its first road win of the season on Dec. 11 when they defeated Youngstown State. 
• On Dec. 11 at YSU, nine Bobcats scored for Ohio, with fie scoring in double figures. 
• Gabe Wiznitzer had a career night at Marshall, on Dec. 3, scoring a career-high 15 points. 
• AJ Brown and Elmore James put on a show on Nov. 30 against UC Clermont, with Brown scoring a career-high 18 points and James dropping 16. 

SCOUTING FLORIDA
Florida enters the matchup with Ohio with a 6-4 record and is coming off a 76-54 loss at the hands of fifth-ranked UConn on Dec. 7 in Gainesville. 

Overall, Florida averages 78.3 points a game, while shooting .460 from the field, .375 from three and .732 from the line. The Gators also average 36.6 rebounds a game, 12.9 assists and 6.3 steals a game. Florida also force 13.7 turnovers a game. 

Meanwhile, Opponents average 69.6 points and 34.9 rebounds a game. Opponents also shoot .424 from the field, .365 from three and .718 from the line. Opponents also dish out 12.0 assists and grab 6.5 steals a game, while also forcing 11.4 turnovers a game. 

Individually, Colin Castleton averages 16.1 points and 7.5 rebounds a game, while shooting g.488 from the field. Will Richard adds 12.1 points and is shooting .567 from three, while Troy Bonham averages 9.6 points a game. 

 SCOUTING OHIO
Ohio enters the matchup with Florida with a 5-4 record after defeating Youngstown State at the buzzer Sunday afternoon. 

As a team, Ohio is averaging 78.1 points and 40.6 rebounds a game, while opponents average 69.9 points and 33.4 rebounds a game. The Bobcats are also shooting .468 from the field, .360 from three and .689 from the line. Ohio also adds 15.0 assists, 6.1 steals and force 11.7 turnovers a game. 

Opponents are shooting .424 from the field, .355 from three and .640 from the line, while dishing out 12.8 assists, 7.0 steals and 12.3 turnovers a game. 

Individually, Dwight Wilson III leads Ohio with 12.5 points a game, while shooting .549 from the field, while also averaging 10.0 rebounds a game. Miles Brown adds 10.6 points a game and is shooting .478 from three. Meanwhile, AJ Brown adds 10.4 points, followed by AJ Clayton who adds 9,4 points and 7.3 rebounds a game.

LAST TIME OUT
With 1.9 seconds remaining and the game tied at 79-79, Dwight Wilson III received an inbound pass from Ben Roderick and put the ball up, with it falling through the net as time expired, giving the Ohio men’s basketball team (5-4) the 81-79 victory over Youngstown State (7-4), Sunday afternoon inside the Beeghly Center. 

Overall, Ohio shot 53.2 percent from the field, 45 percent from three and were 6-of-10 from the line, while YSU shot 39.7 percent from the field, 42.3 percent from three and were 14-of-15 from the line. The Bobcats outrebounded the Penguins, 40-31, while Ohio dished out 16 assists to YSU’s 14. 

Individually, Jaylin Hunter led Ohio with 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists, while DeVon Baker added 15 points. AJ Brown scored 16 points, while Wilson III and AJ Clayton both ended with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

For Youngstown State, Brandon Rush led with 26 points and six made threes, while Malek Green added 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Dwayne Cohill added 16 points.  

HUNTER FINDING A GROOVE
Nine games into his Bobcat career, junior guard Jaylin Hunter started to find his groove in the Green and White. 

On Dec. 11 at Youngstown State, Hunter led the Bobcats with 17 points, five rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the victory. 

Hunter led Ohio against Cleveland State, scoring 17 points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out seven assists in the victory. 

As of Dec. 12, Hunter averages 9.9 points and 4.4 assists a game. 

AJ BROWN MAKES A STATEMENT
Freshman guard AJ Brown showed the type of talent Ohio could see over the next four years against UC Clermont, where he scored a game-high 18 points, went 7-of-11 from the field and dished out four assists in the victory. 

As AJ Brown continues to see more minutes, he continues to get more comfortable, with a stellar game on Dec. 11 at Youngstown State where he scored 16 points, while going 6-of-8 from the field. 

So far this season, Brown is averaging 10.4 points a game and is shooting .571 from the field. 

BROWN SETTING UP FOR CAREER YEAR
Senior guard Miles Brown is already on pace to set new marks in his fourth season in the Green and White. 

After a solid game at Belmont, Brown was clutch against Cleveland State, scoring 14 points and going a perfect 6-of-6 from the line in the victory. 

Brown was also solid against No. 20 Michigan, scoring 11 points and grabbing a season-hight nine rebounds. 

He was back in action during the Bobcat battle where he averaged 16.0 points and set and matched a career-high four made threes before being named the tournament MVP. 

So far on the early season, Brown averages 10.6 points and 3.3 rebounds a game, while shooting .474 from three, .478 from the field and .867 from the line. 

WELCOME BACK DJ
In his return to the court after missing all of last season due to a knee injury, Dwight Wilson III put on a show. 

Wilson III finished the game with a game-high 20 points, going 8-of-10 from the field and 4of-4 from the line. He also grabbed eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action. 

He then put on a show at No. 20 Michigan, scoring 21 points and grabbing nine boards. 

Wilson III was the hero on Dec. 11 at YSU, hitting the buzzer beater to give Ohio the victory. In that game, he scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. 

Wilson III has continued to dominate during the early part of the season, averaging 12.5 points and 10.0 rebounds a game, while shooting .549 from the field. 

SLASH FITTING RIGHT IN
Sophomore AJ Clayton is taking advantage of his new starting roll. 

After grabbing a career-high nine rebounds at Belmont to open the season, Clayton added on, scoring a career-high 15 points at Detroit Mercy on Wednesday. 

Clayton was consistent again on Dec. 11 at YSU, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. 

So far this season, Clayton averages 9.4 points and 7.6 rebounds a game. 

BAKER FINDING HIS FLOW
Senior guard DeVon Baker has continued to get into the flow of the Green and White. 

After opening the season with a 16-point performance at Belmont, Baker seemed to get on track again at YSU on Dec. 11, scoring 15 points.

Up next, Ohio returns to Athens on Saturday, Dec. 17 when they host Stetson. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. Game game can be seen on ESPN3.
