Big Ten Conference Football News: Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State Earn Weekly Football Honors

Spartans’ Haladay and Buckeyes’ Stroud, along with Nittany Lions’ Pinegar and Singleton garner accolades

Following Week 11 contests, the Big Ten Conference Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Players of the Week, and the Freshman of the Week were announced this morning. Below are this week’s honorees:

Offensive Player of the Week
C.J. Stroud, Ohio State
QB – So. – Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. – Rancho Cucamonga

  • Threw for 297 yards on 17-of-28 efficiency and five touchdowns in Ohio State’s 56-14 win over Indiana
  • Recorded his ninth career game, and fourth this season, with at least five touchdown passes to become the first player in Big Ten history to have consecutive seasons with 30 touchdown passes
  • His 297 yards put him over 7,000 passing yards for his career, only the fourth Buckeye signal-caller to reach that mark (Bobby Hoying, Art Schlichter, J.T. Barrett)
  • Earns his fifth career Offensive Player of the Week award and his 12th career weekly honor
  • Last Ohio State Offensive Player of the Week: C.J. Stroud (Oct. 10, 2022)

Defensive Player of the Week
Cal Haladay, Michigan State
LB – So. – Elysburg, Pa. – Southern Columbia

  • Recorded a career-high 19 tackles in the win over Rutgers, the most by a Spartan since Eric Smith had 19 against Notre Dame on Sept. 18, 2004
  • Added a 3-yard tackle for loss
  • Haladay is second in the Big Ten with 99 tackles (9.9 per game)
  • The Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns the second Defensive Player of the Week accolade of his career and second in as many weeks
  • Last Michigan State Defensive Player of the Week: Cal Haladay (Nov. 7, 2022)

Special Teams Player of the Week
Jake Pinegar, Penn State
K – Sr. – Ankeny, Iowa – Ankeny Centennial

  • Went 3-3 on field goals (50, 46, 21), including a 50-yard field goal in the second quarter, tying his career-long and hitting 50-yard field goals in back-to-back games, to help the Nittany Lions shut out Maryland on Saturday
  • Recorded three extra points to bring his career total to 179, four behind Kevin Kelly (183; 2005-08) for the all-time record at Penn State
  • Tallied 12 points on the afternoon, giving him 323 career points, passing Saquon Barkley (318, 2015-17) for second all-time
  • The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree garners the first Special Teams Player of the Week honor of his career
  • Last Penn State Special Teams Player of the Week: Barney Amor (Oct. 3, 2022)

Freshman of the Week
Nicholas Singleton, Penn State
RB – Shillington, Pa. – Governor Mifflin

  • Earned his third 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing the day with 122 rushing yards in Penn State’s win against Maryland
  • Scored on a 45-yard run in the first quarter and a 27-yard run in the second quarter, giving him 10 career touchdown rushes, breaking a tie with Kaytron Allen and Noah Cain (8; 2009) for the Penn State freshman record
  • On his 45-yard touchdown run, Singleton surpassed the 1,000 career all-purpose yards mark (now has 1,061 career all-purpose yards)
  • Earns the third Freshman of the Week honor of his career
