Big Ten Conference News: Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State Earn Weekly Football Honors

Hawkeyes’ Van Ness, Terrapins’ Tagovailoa, Spartans’ Windmon, Buckeyes’ Harrison Jr. and Nittany Lions’ Singleton garner accolades

Following Week 2 contests, the Big Ten Conference Co-Offensive, Defensive, and Special Teams Players of the Week, and the Freshman of the Week were announced this morning. Below are this week’s honorees:

Co-Offensive Players of the Week
Taulia Tagovailoa, Maryland
QB – Jr. – Ewa Beach, Hawaii – Thompson

  • Accounted for five total touchdowns and set the Terrapins’ single-game program record for completion percentage by connecting on 27 of 31 passing attempts in Maryland’s 56-21 win at Charlotte
  • Threw for 391 yards, tossed a career-high four touchdowns, and added a rushing touchdown for his ninth 300-yard career performance
  • Set a new program record with an 87 percent completion rate for a quarterback with at least 15 pass attempts in a game
  • The Academic All-Big Ten honoree earns his second career Offensive Player of the Week award
  • Last Maryland Offensive Player of the Week: Taulia Tagovailoa (Nov. 2, 2020)

Marvin Harrison Jr., Ohio State
WR – So. – Philadelphia, Pa. – St. Joseph’s Prep

  • Caught three touchdown passes in Ohio State’s 45-12 win over Arkansas State, becoming the second wide receiver in school history to catch three touchdown passes in multiple career games (Harrison also caught three in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2022)
  • Had a career-best seven receptions for 184 yards, averaging 26.3 yards per reception
  • Registered four receptions for 137 yards, with two touchdowns (both for 42 yards), in the first half, before adding a 30-yard catch for a score in the third
  • Earns his first career Offensive Player of the Week award
  • Last Ohio State Offensive Player of the Week: C.J. Stroud (Nov. 22, 2021)

Defensive Player of the Week
Jacoby Windmon, Michigan State
DE/LB – Sr. – New Orleans, La. – John Ehret

  • Caused three forced fumbles versus Akron, the most by a Spartan since Joe Bachie had three against Maryland in 2018, while helping Michigan State to its biggest shutout win (52-0) since 1957
  • Recorded 1.5 sacks (14 yards) and 2.5 tackles for loss (17 yards) in addition to a fumble recovery and five tackles overall
  • Windmon now has 5.5 sacks, 6.5 tackles for loss and four forced fumbles in just two games this season
  • Earns the second Defensive Player of the Week accolade of his career and second in as many weeks

Special Teams Player of the Week
Lukas Van Ness, Iowa
DT – So. – Barrington, Ill. – Barrington

  • Blocked two Iowa State punts, tying a school record, in the Hawkeyes’ 10-7 loss
  • It is the sixth time a Hawkeye has had multiple blocks in a single game and Van Ness is the fifth Hawkeye to accomplish the feat
  • His first block of the game set up the Hawkeyes’ first touchdown, while the second blocked punt in the third quarter gave Iowa possession at the Iowa State 20
  • The Academic All-Big Ten honoree garners the first Special Teams Player of the Week honor of his career

Freshman of the Week
Nicholas Singleton, Penn State
RB – Shillington, Pa. – Governor Mifflin

  • Had a breakout performance with 10 carries for 179 yards, including 70- and 44-yard touchdowns and a 48-yard run in Penn State’s 46-10 victory against Ohio
  • Singleton’s first career touchdown was the longest run since Journey Brown’s 85-yard run versus Pitt in 2019, while his 179 yards are a school record for a Beaver Stadium debut
  • His 219 all-purpose yards (179 rushing, 40 kick return) are the most since wide receiver Jahan Dotson’s 254 (242 receiving, 12 punt return) at Maryland in 2021
  • Earns the first Freshman of the Week honor of his career
