Western & Southern Open News: MORNING BRIEFING: Thursday August 18

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN – THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2022

Three Things To Know

1) Home cookin

Four Americans are through to the Round of 16 in both the women’s and men’s tournament. This marks the first time since 2019 that four US women are into the third round, with Madison KeysJessica PegulaAlison Riske-Amritraj and Shelby Rogers taking the court Thursday. Since the WTA returned to Cincinnati in 2004, there has never been more than three Americans into the quarterfinals.

Sebastian Korda and John Isner will face each other in an all-American third round match Thursday, and they are joined in the Round of 16 by countrymen Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton. This is the most Americans into the third round since five reached this stage in 2003. That’s also the last time three Americans advanced to the quarterfinals.

2) Teen Scene

At 19, Emma Raducanu is the youngest woman to reach the Round of 16 since then 16-year-old Amanda Anisimova in 2018. Raducanu is bidding to be the youngest to reach the quarterfinals here since 19-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova reached the 2010 semifinals.

Nineteen-year-olds Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton are the youngest men to reach the Round of 16 since 19 year-old Denis Shapovalov in 2018, and they are seeking to be the first 19-year-old quarterfinalist here since Miomir Kecmanovic in 2019.

This is the first Western & Southern Open with two teenage men in the Round of 16 since 2007 when 18-year-old Juan Martin del Potro and 19-year-old Sam Querrey did so. If both Alcaraz and Shelton win Thursday, it would put two teenagers into the quarterfinals for the first time since since 1990 when 19-year-old Jim Courier and 18-year-old Michael Chang reached the final eight.

3) Seeds Stat

In the men’s draw, 11 seeds are into the Round of 16, the most since 2015. In contrast, six women’s seeds are into the Round of 16, the fewest since 2015.

Fun Fact

On Wednesday, 19-year-old Ben Shelton defeated fifth-ranked Casper Ruud. He is the youngest American to defeat a top five opponent since 18-year-old Andy Roddick beat Gustavo Kuerten at Montreal in 2001. Shelton is the reigning NCAA champion, having claimed the title while playing at the University of Florida.
