The Pittsburgh Pirates today recalled outfielder Travis Swaggerty from Triple-A Indianapolis. To make room for Swaggerty on the 26-man active roster, infielder Rodolfo Castro has been optioned to Triple-A.
The 24-year-old Swaggerty will be making his Major League debut and will wear uniform No. 50. He entered the 2022 season tabbed by Baseball America as being the “Best Defensive Outfielder” in the Pirates organization, as well as possessing the “Best Outfield Arm.” The 5-foot-10, 200-pound lefthanded hitter appeared in 35 games for Indianapolis this season, hitting .280 (37-for-132) with five doubles, two triples, four home runs, 22 RBI, a .362 on-base percentage, .439 slugging percentage and .801 OPS.
Swaggerty was the 10th overall selection by the Pirates in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of South Alabama. Prior to being promoted to the big leagues today, he hit .259 (215-for831) with 35 doubles, seven triples, 21 home runs, 89 RBI and a .343 OBP in 220 career minor league games. Defensively, he has made all 207 of his professional appearances in center field.
