The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Yerry (pronounced “Yairy”) De Los Santos from Triple-A Indianapolis.
To make room on the 26-man active roster, right-handed pitcher Bryse Wilson has been optioned to Indianapolis. Infielder Kevin Newman has been transferred from the 10- to the 60-day injured list (retro to April 27) to make room for De Los Santos on the 40-man roster.
De Los Santos went 2-0 with a 1.72 ERA (15.2ip/3er), 20 strikeouts, 0.64 WHIP and .148 batting average against in 12 relief appearances with Indianapolis before being promoted to the big leagues. He also allowed just one hit in 20 at-bats against left-handed batters this season.
De Los Santos, who was signed by the Pirates as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014, has posted a career record of 11-9 with 18 saves, a 2.67 ERA (175.1ip/52er) and 174 strikeouts in 96 appearances (24 starts) in his minor league career.
De Los Santos, who has no previous big league experience, will wear uniform #57.
