COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed goaltender Joonas Korpisalo to a one-year contract extension for the 2022-23 National Hockey League season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.
Korpisalo, 28, has posted a 76-67-21 record with a 3.04 goals-against average (GAA), .902 save percentage (SV%) and three shutouts in 182 career regular season games since making his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets in 2015-16. He has also registered a 3-5 mark with a 1.90 GAA, .941 SV% and two shutouts in nine career outings in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
“Joonas has been a consummate pro during his Blue Jackets career and just two years ago was coming of a season in which he was selected to play in the All-Star Game and had a record-setting performance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs,” said Kekalainen. “His 2021-22 season was derailed by injury, but we fully believe he will return to form, and are happy that he will continue to be a part of our team.”
The Pori, Finland native went 7-11-0 with a 4.15 GAA and .877 SV% on 1,128 minutes played in 22 appearances with the Blue Jackets in 2021-22 before missing the final 17 contests of the season with a hip injury. He set career bests and was named to the NHL All-Star Game (missed due to injury) in 2019-20, going 19-12-5 with a 2.60 GAA, .911 SV% and two shutouts in 37 contests. That postseason he finished second in the League in shutouts (two) and save percentage (.941, min. 3 GP), while playing in nine of the club’s 10 contests.
Columbus’ third round pick, 62nd overall, at the 2012 NHL Draft, Korpisalo registered a 19-20-6 record with a 2.50 GAA and .911 SV% in 46 career AHL games with the Springfield Falcons and Lake Erie/Cleveland Monsters between 2015-20. He helped lead the Monsters to the 2016 Calder Cup, going 6-2 with a 2.96 GAA in nine contests.
The 6-3, 193-pound netminder has represented Finland at various international tournaments, including the 2017 IIHF World Championships. He also suited up for the country at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championships and 2012 IIHF U18 World Championships.
