Rising junior Cervantes picks up win in first Olympic appearance

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Buckeyes competed in the individual fencing competition at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
In men’s foil, Diego Cervantes, a rising junior representing Mexico, won his first Olympic bout, as he defeated No. 29 Mengkai Huang of China, 15-14, recording the final two touches for the win in the Table of 64. Cervantes, the No. 36 seed, fell to No. 4 Enzo Lefort of France, 15-11, in the Table of 32. Cervantes placed 32nd in the final standings.
In women’s foil, Eleanor Harvey was making her second Olympic appearance for Canada. After finishing seventh in Rio in 2016, she placed 16th in Tokyo. Harvey, the No. 19 seed, received a first round bye and then posted a 15-9 win over No. 14 Pauline Ranvier of France in the Table of 32. In the Table of 16, the Buckeye alum lost to eventual gold medalist Lee Keifer of the United States, 15-13.
Marc-Antoine Blais-Belanger, representing Canada in men’s epee, dropped his first Olympic bout. As the No. 32 seed, Blais-Belanger fell in the Table of 64 to No. 33 Chao Dong of China, 15-7, and finished the event in 34th place.
The women’s foil team event, with Harvey and fellow Buckeye alum Alanna Goldie on the Canadian roster, is set to start Wednesday evening (ET) with the quarterfinals. Canada’s foil squad is ranked sixth in the world. The competition can be streamed through the NBC Sports app and NBCSports.com.
