COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Brendan Gaunce to a one-year, two-way National Hockey League/American Hockey League contract for the 2021-22 season, club General Manager and Alternate Governor Jarmo Kekalainen announced today.
Gaunce, 27, has registered six goals and 10 assists for 16 points with 47 penalty minutes in 118 career NHL games with the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks from 2015-20. The forward posted NHL career highs in goals and points with 4-2-6 and 10 penalty minutes in 37 outings with the Canucks in 2017-18. In 2016-17, he set career highs in assists, penalty minutes and games played with 0-5-5 and 33 penalty minutes in 57 contests with Vancouver.
Selected by Vancouver in the first round, 26th overall, at the 2012 NHL Draft, Gaunce has collected 66-82-148 and 137 penalty minutes in 241 career games over a six-year AHL career with the Providence Bruins and Utica Comets since making his pro debut in 2014-15. In 2019-20, he appeared in one game with Boston and tallied an AHL career high in goals with 18-19-37 and 34 penalty minutes in 52 games with Providence.
The 6-2, 217-pound center/left wing spent the 2020-21 campaign with the Vaxjo Lakers in the Swedish Hockey League, recording 5-7-12 with 18 penalty minutes and a +10 plus/minus rating in 18 contests. He added 3-4-7 and 29 penalty minutes in 12 playoff games to help the club capture the SHL Championship.
A native of Sudbury, Ontario, Gaunce racked up 103-133-236 and 211 penalty minutes in 258 career games with the Belleville Bulls and Erie Otters from 2010-14. He served as Belleville’s captain from 2012-14. He also represented Canada at the 2012 IIHF U18 World Championships.
