This past Sunday afternoon, Jonathan Mensah produced a performance that shows why the Crew’s captain is also one of the best defenders in MLS and an unsung hero.
With an inspiring performance on both ends of the pitch, the center back from Accra, Ghana, delivered the game-winning goal in the 65th minute and was a stalwart defensively, keeping Atlanta United FC in a losing spiral in the 1-0 win at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Center backs along with the defenders, help the goalkeeper keep the ball out of the net. And Mensah’s statistics were phenomenal: his 14 clearances were the most by anyone in the league so far this season. His 11 headed clearances are also a single-match high in MLS.
The well-liked and respected captain’s 43 completed passes were second-most of any Black & Gold players (take a guess at who led the team) and Mensah’s 89.6-percent passing accuracy was third-highest. His 71 touches were also second-most, trailing only Darlington Nagbe.
Furthermore, add two tackles, and a block to 31-year-old’s game stats.
Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing a little research on that. And he just bought me lunch because I found it for him smile Therefore let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch!
