Rick Short and Drew Hedman to take on new roles with the Major League staff
PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Thursday that they have parted ways with Hitting Coach Darnell Coles and Assistant Hitting Coach Eric Hinske. The team named Triple-A Reno Hitting Coach Rick Short and Run Production Coordinator Drew Hedman as co-hitting coaches.
Short is in his first season as the Aces’ hitting coach following 2 seasons in the same role for Double-A Jackson (2019-20). He also served as the hitting coach for Single-A Kane County in 2018 and as a coach for Rookie Advanced Missoula in 2017. He was an area scout for the D-backs from 2010-17.
The Illinois native played 12 seasons in the Minors for the Orioles (1994-2000), Cubs (2001), Angels (2002), Royals (2004) and Expos/Nationals (2004-05) before reaching the Major Leagues with the Nationals in 2005. Short also played 5 seasons in Japan with Chiba Lotte (2003) and Rakuten (2006-09), winning the Pacific League batting title in 2008.
Hedman is in his third season as the team’s run production coordinator where he assists the Major League coaching staff with advance scouting process for hitters. He played 4 seasons in the Red Sox organization (2009-12) and worked in the Nationals’ front office and as an assistant coach for Vanderbilt’s 2014 National Championship team before joining Arizona as a professional scout in 2018.
