HE WAS OUR PLAYER OF THE WEEK
RF Nick Castellanos is only the fourth player
in franchise history to produce in the Reds’
first 4 games of a season at least 8 hits and
3 HR…according to @EliasSports, he joins
Deron Johnson in 1967 (8h, 4hr), Kal Daniels
in 1988 (11h, 3hr) and Todd Frazier in 2013
(8h, 3hr)…through the season’s first weekend,
Castellanos led all National League batters in
slugging percentage (1.364) while ranking
T1st in HR (2) and extra-base hits (4), T2nd
in RBI (5) and third in batting average (.545)
and on-base percentage (.583)…SD’s Eric
Hosmer yesterday was named NL Player of
the Week (.636, 2 2b, 2hr, 6rbi, 2.030ops).
TONIGHT’S GAME: Is Game 2 (1-0) of a 3-game series vs Jimmy T’s
Pirates and Game 5 (3-1) of a 6-game homestand that included a 2-1 series
win vs the Cardinals…immediately following tomorrow’s afternoon game,
the Redlegs will fly to Phoenix for Thu’s day off before beginning a 6-game
road trip at Diamondbacks (3g) and at Giants (3g)…the Redlegs went 7-19-
2 in spring training.
SERIES NOTES: The Reds went 7-3 vs Pit in 2020…the last 2 games of last
season’s first scheduled home series here, on 8/15 & 8/16, were postponed
to allow for additional testing following a positive test for COVID-19 by a
Reds player…those postponements led to a doubleheader split on 9/4 at
PNC Park and to a doubleheader sweep by the Reds on 9/14 at GABP…
was the Reds’ first doubleheader sweep of the Pirates since 8/31/09, also
at GABP.
TRANSACTION: C Deivy Grullón today was claimed off waivers by the
Rays…Grullón was designated for assignment Saturday, when the Reds
claimed off waivers from the Indians C Beau Taylor.
SHADES OF GRAY: RHP Sonny Gray (muscle strain in his back) last night
at the alternate site in Louisville pitched in the scrimmage vs Royals affiliate
NW Arkansas…Gray started and threw 60 pitches in 4.2 innings without
issue.
DISCIPLINED: Reds RF Nick Castellanos yesterday received from Major
League Baseball a 2-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for his
aggressive actions and for instigating a benches-clearing incident in the
bottom of the fourth inning of Sat’s 9-6 win vs StL…he will continue to play
while he appeals the suspension…teammates Eugenio Suárez and Jesse
Winker also were fined undisclosed amounts, as were Nolan Arenado,
Jordan Hicks and Yadier Molina of the Cardinals…in the fourth inning,
Castellanos was ejected for the first time in his career after play was halted
for 10 minutes when benches cleared…he reached base that inning when he
was hit in the ribs by a Jake Woodford pitch and later scored on a wild pitch.
RED HOT: Reds batters produed 27 runs runs in the season-opening
series win vs the Cardinals, the third-highest total in their history for the
first 3 games of a season (1895 Reds, 36 runs & 1976 World Series
champions, 33 runs)…through the first 5 days of the season, Reds batters
lead the National League in slugging percentage while ranking second to
the defending World Series champion Dodgers in runs scored, batting
average and on-base percentage.
ALTERNATE WORKOUT SITE: The Reds’ alternate workout site
will be located this season at Louisville Slugger Field, home of
their long-time Class AAA affiliate…last year’s alternate workout
site was located in nearby Mason at Prasco Park.
