HOUSTON – Forward Reggie Chaney has joined the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program after recently signing a scholarship agreement, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson announced Wednesday.
Chaney, who stands at 6-foot-8 and weighs 225 pounds, will sit out the 2020-21 season as a redshirt but practice daily with the Cougars. He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the start of the 2021-22 season unless he receives a waiver from the NCAA.
“That thing that impressed us about Reggie was that his style of play is very similar to our style of play. He is a big, strong, tough, hard-nosed player,” Sampson said. “The emphasis we place on rebounding will resonate with Reggie. He will continue to improve across the board, and we need him to. We were fortunate to sign a player of Reggie’s caliber.”
A native of Tulsa, Okla., Chaney competed in 63 games with nine starts during his first two years at Arkansas. He drained 59.2 percent of his shots from the field, including 67.1 percent in the shortened 2019-20 season.
He also swatted a combined 64 shots, blocking at least one shot in 34 games, and posted nine games with 3+ rejections.
Chaney posted career highs with 17 points and 11 rebounds at Missouri late in the 2019-20 season and added 11 boards at Alabama and against Northern Kentucky during his career.
As a freshman during the 2018-19 season, Chaney competed in all 34 games and scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting with five rebounds and seven blocked shots in an NIT First Round road win at Providence.
He began his high school career at Frisco’s Liberty High, averaging 11.2 points,, 7.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game, and was named the Nov. 3 overall prospect from the state of Texas by 247Sports.
Transferring to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev., for his final two years, Chaney was named to the USA TODAY All-Nevada Second Team after totaling 13.8 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while leading his team to a 32-5 record.
